Why Trump's attempt to shakedown the US's allies is 'kind of foolish'

[U.S. Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump appears at a campaign roundtable event in Manchester, New Hampshire, U.S., October 28, 2016. REUTERS/Carlo Allegri/File Photo]Thomson Reuters President-elect Donald Trump repeatedly questioned the wisdom of the US' military alliances during his campaign, saying at different times that NATO member countries and the US's Asian allies should pay their share or prepare to be abandoned by the US. Trump repeatedly floated the idea of the US withdrawing military support for Japan and South Korea, leaving those nations to develop their own nuclear weapons and defend themselves. But according to Dr. Jeffrey Lewis, founding publisher of Arms Control Wonk, a website dedicated to arms control, nuclear disarmament, and nonproliferation, this idea is "kind of foolish." "It would be great if the allies spend more," said Lewis of Trump's calls to allies to pick up more of the bill; however, the US is "giant, and other than a few of [the US's allies], they’re not." Over the past few years, NATO has repeatedly called on its member states to spend 2% of their GDP on defense measures. "In the Baltics they were paying close to 2%, and one of them was over 2%," said Lewis, but the numbers simply don't add up. NATO members like Estonia and Greece have a tiny GDP compared to the US. Even if they all spent 2% of their GDP on defense, "it doesn’t really get us to where we need to be in terms of an integrated capability to resist Russian aggression," said Lewis. Therefore, Lewis argues, shaking down our NATO allies to pay up is "kind of foolish," as the US already spends more on defense than the 27 other NATO member states combined.  [NATO Trident Juncture]Thomson Reuters In Japan and South Korea, other stalwart US allies, Lewis argues that they pay their share, and that the world enjoys stability in Asia as a result of the US-Japanese-South Korean alliance. "Japan pays 70% of the cost of hosting our forces," said Lewis. Therefore it's actually cheaper to host US troops in Japan than it would be to host those troops in the US. It also gives the US a forward presence in the region, and deters anyone from attacking Japan, as they'd be immediately met by the full force of the US military. [north korea]Thomson ReutersSouth Korea, on the other hand, pays less. Lewis pegs the figure at 40-50%. However, unlike the Japanese, who want US forces present, "a healthy segment of the Korean establishment wants us to go home," said Lewis. According to Lewis, some in South Korea "just want to go ahead and take care of this North Korea thing right now." But a fight between North Korea, allied with China, and South Korea, allied with the US, could get extremely ugly, and even go nuclear. Lewis says that the US is far better off supporting the South Koreans and keeping them from becoming involved in a nuclear conflict with potentially global ramifications. Lewis argues that while the US could potentially turn its back on its Asian allies, "those nuclear weapons will not just be landing in South Korea." Trump's new cabinet pick Wilbur Ross reportedly served as head of a secret Wall Street frat

[Wilbur Ross, Chairman and CEO of WL Ross and Co., speaks at the Japan Society, Thursday, Nov. 17, 2011 in New York.]AP Photo/Mark Lennihan On Wednesday, President-elect Trump tapped billionaire financier Wilbur Ross as his commerce secretary. The 79-year-old was a senior policy adviser to Trump during his campaign. He amassed his estimated $2.9 billion wealth working first at investment bank Rothschild Inc. before starting his own investment firm, WL Ross & Co. It's that Wall Street background which reportedly earned him membership into secret Wall Street fraternity Kappa Beta Phi. While the invitation-only fraternity is secret, there is a little first-hand information about Ross' membership in Kevin Roose's book "Young Money" which includes a chapter on Kappa Beta Phi and its 80th induction dinner in 2012. Roose adapted a portion of his book for New York Magazine, recounting how he snuck into the party and was eventually caught and thrown out. The excerpt details Ross' welcoming statements at the dinner. Roose wrote: "It was January 2012, and Ross, wearing a tuxedo and purple velvet moccasins embroidered with the fraternity’s Greek letters, was standing at the dais of the St. Regis Hotel ballroom, welcoming a crowd of two hundred wealthy and famous Wall Street figures to the Kappa Beta Phi dinner. Ross, the leader (or 'Grand Swipe') of the fraternity, was preparing to invite 21 new members — 'neophytes,' as the group called them — to join its exclusive ranks." Kappa Beta Phi has existed since before the 1929 stock market crash, and includes some of the biggest names on the Street, Julia LaRoche reported for Business Insider. Those names reportedly include former New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg, former head of Citigroup's wealth management Sallie Krawcheck, and Jon Corzine, a former New Jersey governor and CEO of now-bankrupt brokerage firm MF Global. Largely an honorific society, members meet annually at the St. Regis Hotel for their black-tie dinner to induct new members. Ross has never confirmed his membership, but in Roose's book, the author recounts how intense the situation became when members of the fraternity realized he was a reporter: "A number of prominent Kappas had rushed over to our table. Before the situation could escalate dangerously, a bond investor and former Grand Swipe named Alexandra Lebenthal stepped in between us. Wilbur Ross quickly followed, and the two of them led me out into the lobby, past a throng of Wall Street tycoons, some of whom seemed to be hyperventilating."  NOW WATCH: Here’s the difference between a button-up and a button-down shirt

Politico's cofounder wants to sell $10,000-plus subscriptions to his new media company

[jim Vandehei]Getty/Paul Morigi Politico cofounder Jim VandeHei has finally unveiled the details of his new media venture, Axios, which will launch fully in January and cover the "collision between tech and areas such as bureaucracy, health care, energy, and the transportation infrastructure." But the big question about Axios isn't whether the topic area is relevant — it is! — but whether VandeHei will be able to carve out a business model at a time when layoffs are rocking both new and old media. Axios' mission statement, according to Vanity Fair, certainly suggests it is going to be different: "Media is broken—and too often a scam." Particularly, VandeHei thinks he can thread the needle between the legacy behemoths getting slammed by declines in print advertising, and the nimble upstarts who are seeing some forms of internet advertising race to zero. In doing this, it seems like VandeHei will employ some of the tricks that worked well at Politico, while adding a few new wrinkles. Here are a few big points Axios is going to hit: * AXIOS IS GOING TO WRITE SHORT. What VandeHei doesn't want is for Axios staffers to write for other journalists, which he sees as producing pieces that are simply too long and boring for regular readers. He characterized this as the biggest problem in the media right now. “People don’t want the pieces we’re writing,” he told Recode. “They’re too damn long.” * AXIOS IS GOING TO LIVE ON A BUNCH OF DIFFERENT PLATFORMS. VandeHei is on the "distributed" media train, meaning that he wants Axios, in some capacity, to live wherever you are — Snapchat, Facebook, and so on. VandeHei is especially bullish on Snapchat's Discover section. * VANDEHEI WANTS TO SELL $10,000-PLUS PREMIUM AXIOS SUBSCRIPTIONS. At Recode's Code Media conference, VandeHei said he couldn't see being "super intrigued with a subscription less than $10,000.” He sees subscriptions coming two to three years into the venture, however. * AXIOS HAS TO BE FREEMIUM. While VandeHei thinks subscriptions will be a necessary part of the business, some work has to be free to build up, and continue to promote, the brand name. His goal is to have 50% of revenue come from subscriptions, and 50% from advertising. * PEOPLE HAVE TO WANT TO READ AXIOS. Axios means "worthy" in Greek, and VandeHei has already snagged some well-respected journalists people listen to, like Fortune's Dan Primack and Politco's Mike Allen. But everyone has to be on board with the "smart brevity" mandate. NOW WATCH: A penny costs 1.43 cents to make — here’s what the rest of US currency costs
