The Milwaukee Bucks are making a $100-million investment in Giannis Antetokounmpo, and it's a genius move

[giannis]Aaron Gash/AP The Milwaukee Bucks made a big investment for their future on Monday, signing 21-year-old forward Giannis "Greek Freak" Antetokounmpo to a four-year, $100-million contract extension, accordng to Yahoo's Adrian Wojnarowski. While it's a high price to pay for a 21-year-old who's still very much developing, it may look like one of the better contracts in the NBA in a few years. In three years, the 6-foot-11 Antetokounmpo has shown signs of growth every season, boosting his scoring, shooting, rebound, passing, and basic defensive numbers each year he's been in the league. The only statistical area he's regressed has been in three-point shooting, which is not a huge aspect of his game. Last season, Antetokounmpo wowed the NBA world by taking over ball-handling duties in the second half of the season and nearly averaging a triple-double. After the All-Star break, he averaged over 18 points, eight rebounds, seven assists, two steals, and a block per game while shooting over 50% from the field. Importantly, last season, he also raised his usage rate considerably while lowering his turnovers. All of this is to say that Antetokounmpo's ceiling is unlike anything the NBA has seen. Though he won't be a point guard full time, he's an athletic wing who can play both ends of the court, handle the ball, and has the size of a big man, but moves like a guard. This is special: RAW Embed Given the way Antetokounmpo surprised the league with his ball-handling capabilities last season, it remains unknown what else he can add to his game. In three years, he could improve exponentially and he'll still only be 24 years old.  With the NBA's salary cap expected to rise to $102 million next summer, Antetokounmpo's less-than-max deal will look even smarter. The Bucks have a potential superstar in the making, at 21 years old, on a discount deal. Much of the Bucks rebuild remains hazy, but they nailed a crucial first step: finding a young building block and locking him into a long-term, affordable deal. In the meantime, somebody get Giannis a smoothie. NOW WATCH: Here's how LeBron James reacted when he learned Kevin Durant was joining the Warriors

7 everyday behaviors the most conscientious people avoid

[photographer on beach]Flickr/nhoffmann75 I walked out into the middle of the street without looking both ways, forgot to pay parking tickets, lost debit and credit cards regularly and, when I became self-employed, convinced myself everything would just work out. My "I'll just make it" mentality is characteristic of my generation: Millennials are more optimistic about our futures than any other generation ever has been. Among millennials who say they're not earning enough, 89% think they will in the future, according to Pew Research Center. Yet we're making less on average than our parents ever did. If success isn't falling in your lap, don't give up hope (seriously: pessimism impairs job performance). But it may be time to prioritize an underrated personality trait: Conscientious people live longer, get better grades, commit fewer crimes, earn more (along with their spouses), have higher influence, are more likely to lead companies that succeed long-term, are happier at work and have better marriages. Convinced by the benefits of conscientiousness, I set out to master it. One of my New Year's resolutions was "finishing, details, polish." In my research, however, I found that conscientiousness is far more than fastidiousness. In fact, acting "Type A" only has a weak correlation with conscientiousness. In the broadest sense, conscientious people have a knack for avoiding behaviors that will damage their long-term happiness and success. Here are seven things they don't do: 1. BUY STUFF ON A WHIM Conscientious people anticipate what they need and the future consequences of what they buy. (It's called a budget.) Conscientiousness people are less likely to exceed their credit limit, miss a bill payment or cheat on their taxes. They're also less likely to make an unplanned purchase under time pressure or be convinced to buy something based on promotions or sales tactics. Next time you're tempted toward an impulsive purchase, raise the stakes on yourself. Ask, "Do I want to earn more, have better relationships and live longer?" If "yes," take a week to think on it. 2. TAKE MENTAL NOTES Conscientious people know they won't remember. So they plan, decide and draft on paper. They write down important dates. Highly successful people, like Richard Branson, carry a notebook in their pockets at all times. Greek shipping magnate Aristotle Onassis told Forbes contributor Kevin Kruse, "Writing it down will make you act upon it. If you don't write it down, you will forget it. THAT is a million-dollar lesson they don't teach you in business school!" Likewise, Harvard Medical School suggests making daily plans and using reminder tools or apps to keep you on track. Next time you think "Ooh, I want to remember that," don't trust yourself. Write it down — anywhere. Once, when Richard Branson didn't have his notepad with him, he wrote an idea down in his passport! 3. SLOUCH Conscientious people stand up straight. Their posture is a reflection of their attitude: they care about others' perceptions of them, want to do things the right way and have high self-esteem. Because conscientious people do good work, they report high self-efficacy which is, in turn, positively correlated with work performance. How are you showing up in your day-to-day life? Literally. How do you show up to work? To dinner? To your workouts? Research consistently shows that how you act influences how you feel. Bad posture, for example, can make you stressed, sad and afraid. Is that how you want to approach your life? [BI GRAPHICS_11 people share their biggest money mistake and what they learned from it_check insurance]Flickr/nhoffmann75 4. BINGE Conscientious people know that small things add up. Every pound and every minute matters. Not surprisingly, conscientious people have a lower risk of obesity and are more likely to lose weight than those with lower levels of conscientiousness. Less conscientious people watch more television, oversleep and are more likely to engage in risky health-related behaviors like smoking and heavy drinking. Conscientiousness, on the other hand, is associated with good health for both you and your partner. Dr. Jennifer Lodi-Smith, a postdoctoral fellow in the Center for Vital Longevity, explained, "Being conscientious predicts good health because the conscientious individual is actually going to go out and do the things their doctor says they should be doing to stay healthy." Instead of binging on what you know is bad for you, take small, deliberate, scheduled actions to improve your wellbeing. 5. BREAK PROMISES Conscientious people are dependable. They're much less likely than others to back out of, miss or forget appointments. They rarely show up late. Conscientious people know that succumbing to convenience kills long-term goals; that good things take time and hard work. Perhaps this is why conscientiousness is linked to honesty and integrity. Not breaking promises requires fully understanding what you're able to commit to. Next time you're tempted to say "yes" to something ask yourself, "Am I certain I'll be able to keep this promise?" Framing even a small "yeah, sure" as a promise can help you internalize its weight, uphold your commitments and build trust in your relationships. 6. QUIT  Conscientious people have grit. They're more likely to continue solving a problem even after failing and work extra hard to make sure stuff isdone right. Conscientious people may not execute better than anyone else, but they _keep _executing better than anyone else. "Highly conscientious employees do a series of things better than the rest of us," explains University of Illinois psychologist Brent Roberts. University of Pennsylvania psychologist Angela Duckworth found that a strong combination of passion and perseverance is, in fact, more important to children's scholarly success than IQ. Duckworth believes there are four components of grit that all of us can cultivate: _interest_ in the subject matter, a desire to understand; _the capacity to deliver consistent practice_, making something a daily habit; _purpose_, a conviction that what you do everyday is meaningful and beneficial to other people; and _hope_. 7. IGNORE PROBLEMS  Conscientious people pick up after their dogs' poop. They display high levels of autonomy and perceived internal locus of control; in other words, they take responsibility for what goes wrong in work and life and fix it. Unsurprisingly, those with an internal locus of control report higher levels of life satisfaction and perform better at work. Conscientious people pay attention so well that they often anticipate problems before they arise: "By being conscientious, people sidestep stress they'd otherwise create for themselves," Drake Baer writes for Inc. If you're like me, you've spent a lot of your life realizing, "[_xyz_] is kind of an issue. This is a small problem. I should probably deal with this." Problems don't solve themselves. Small things become bigger things. Save yourself the headaches by scheduling time in your calendar every week to deal with the little stuff. After all my research on conscientious people, I can sum them up in five words: they know they’re not invincible. For millennials struggling to adapt to the real world, as I did, embodying this trait could be the key to a successful, happy adulthood. It doesn’t have to be a radical transition. I started small; I now make my bed every morning, pick up after myself and collect home office expense receipts for my taxes. And it’s not too late to change: Research shows that conscientiousness continues to developeven into old age. If you’re waiting for your cue, this was it. _Caroline Beaton covers the psychology of millennials at work for Forbes, The Huffington Post and Psychology Today, among others. She also works with businesses to launch content marketing campaigns that connect with her generation. A lifelong to-do lister, Caroline’s been meaning to write a book on procrastination. Shares and oil rally ahead of crunch central bank meetings – as it happened

European stock markets rally as investors await news from the Bank of Japan and the US Federal Reserve later this week * Introduction: Two big central bank meetings this week * Oil is up * Brexit profits warning from UK outsourcer 5.56pm BST OVER IN GREECE THE GOVERNMENT IS ONCE AGAIN IN A RACE AGAINST THE CLOCK TO IMPLEMENT REFORMS THAT WILL UNLOCK FURTHER BAILOUT FUNDS. After the tense restart of talks with visiting inspectors last week, officials are promising to placate creditors with an omnibus bill detailing new measures this week. Helena Smith reports from Athens: With its popularity plummeting in the polls, Greece’s leftist-led government is keen to use the resumption of talks with lenders to good effect. Long and short, that means debt relief and putting discussion of it on the table. To get there Athens needs to complete the current round of prior actions, or milestone reforms, it failed to deal with over the summer. Upon them not only rests the next installment of bailout aid – at €2.8bn critical for the debt-wracked economy - but the onset of official debate over what to do about Greece’s unsustainable debt load, at 180% of national output by far the highest in the eurozone. “The idea is to push the multi-bill with all these measures through parliament this week,” said one well-placed source. Among the measures will be the appointment of a supervisory board for the country’s new privatisation fund - an issue Athens has rowed about vociferously with creditors – and the formal inclusion of several loss-making public entities in the body. With Greece’s debt-repayment timetable far from pressing, creditors - though peaved with the slow pace of reforms - are not piling on the pressure. Instead it is the government, that feeling the pinch of public hostility, is now keen to move on to the next step of passing the reforms so the Euro Working Group can agree to disburse the aid when it next meets on September 29. If that goal is achieved, the hope is the next bailout review will begin on October 17 – and with it the much anticipated issue of debt forgiveness. 5.14pm BST With a recovery in oil prices and hopes that the US Federal Reserve will keep interest rates on hold on Wednesday, stock markets have begun the week on an upbeat note. A weaker dollar helped lift commodity companies, with mining companies making up five on the top ten riser on the FTSE 100 index. The final scores showed: Continue reading...

DNA from the deep? Antikythera shipwreck yields ancient human bones

Site has already revealed most spectacular cargo ever found from antiquity, but bones are first hope of sequencing DNA from 1st century BC shipwreck victim Death, when it came, was sudden and cruel. The individual, either a crew member or passenger, was trapped on board when the huge ship foundered. Dashed on the rocks, the vessel slid beneath the waves, tumbled down an undersea cliff, and swiftly became buried in sediment on the seabed. Now, more than 2,000 years later, archaeologists have recovered the bones of the individual they now call Pamphilos. Thought to be a man in his late teens to early 20s, he was on the ship sailing from Asia Minor to Rome when disaster struck off the tiny Greek island of Antikythera between Crete and the Peloponnese. I pay $1,266.54 INTERNET: $88 (my husband covers utilities, which is comparable) PHONE BILL: $200, but my husband reimburses me for half ROCK CLIMBING GYM MEMBERSHIP: $85 NETFLIX: $7.99 HULU PLUS: $7.99 NEW YORK TIMES WEEKENDER SUBSCRIPTION: $6 (special discount rate) STANDING DONATION TO KARAM FOUNDATION TO SUPPORT A SYRIAN REFUGEE FAMILY: $50 YEARLY EXPENSES TAXES (ACCOUNTANT FEE): $162.50 for my half. My husband and I coordinate our checks for federal taxes and our accountant. We’ll get a refund from New York State that makes up for these two fees, and then some. My accountant has told me in the past that it’s better to owe than be owed when it comes to taxes, because you still get a little more money this way — but whenever he starts to go into the intricacies of withholdings on paychecks, he starts to sound like one of the teachers in Charlie Brown. I paid $467.50 extra in taxes this year. DAY ONE Meng He/Flickr 8 a.m. — I have the same breakfast every morning: Half a cup of vanilla Greek yogurt, half a cup of pumpkin puree, one tablespoon of chia seeds. 9:15 a.m. — I'm out of coffee at home, so I stop at Le Pain Quotidien for one. I contemplate also getting a roll, because Le Pain Quotidien is basically Amsterdam’s red-light district for bread, but I essentially have exactly enough for my coffee in quarters and I hate to use my card for such a small amount. The barista is excited, as she needed quarters. $2.75 11 a.m. — Still want bread. I try to sate this craving with a Pink Lady apple and some almond butter from home. Desired effect is not achieved. 12:05 p.m. — I convince enough of my coworkers to rally around having bread with lunch, so our office manager approves the purchase of a $3 baguette from LPQ from our treats fund. I wish I had this same determination when it came to understanding my taxes. 12:30 p.m. — Lunch from home: An arugula salad with celery and broiled eye-round steak. I’m not a dressing fan, but the steak juice gives it the extra something it needs. Oh, and bread. Beautiful, free bread. 2:20 p.m. — Check my Wells Fargo and see that my Hulu and Netflix payments both went through today. It seems ridiculous to have both, but I love that Hulu has most all of the Criterion collection and I try to watch at least one new Criterion film each week. My automatic transfer of $83 from checking to savings also goes through. 4 p.m. — I bring most of my food from home, because lunch options in midtown are ridiculously expensive. I have a Pink Lady apple with almond butter, which I pack into a Ziploc bag and squeeze, pastry-bag style, onto the apple slices, because I’m classy. Also because I lost my little bento box thing that held small items like almond butter. 8:30 p.m. — Working late. I have a Tarocco blood orange on my way home. 8:45 p.m. — Improvising with what we have in the pantry, I make a frittata with eggs, plain Greek yogurt, some leftover Israeli couscous, onion, and Parm. It does the job and I eat it with my husband while watching The Americans. 9:50 p.m. — Check out on my latest Stitch Fix box; I keep a pair of culottes and a sailor-stripe shirt. $83. DAILY TOTAL: $85.75 DAY 2 Didriks/Flickr 7:05 a.m. — FreshDirect arrives. I buy for the week and do a lot of meal prep, but I got a little extra today, as I’m hosting a dinner party and making a seafood and radicchio risotto for eight people. $85.83 9:15 a.m. — Make the same Greek yogurt/pumpkin/chia breakfast with coffee at home. I get the La Colombe beans from FreshDirect and one bag usually lasts two weeks, as I’m the only one in the house who drinks coffee. 10:05 a.m. — My husband and I start to make our way down to the Brooklyn Ikea. He stops at the bodega near our apartment to get an iced tea and gets me a kombucha to make the card minimum. 11:50 a.m. — Go to Ikea for five of the $7.99 folding chairs to accommodate the headcount at tonight’s dinner, along with some drinking glasses, AA batteries, and paper napkins to use as guest hand towels in the bathroom. While we’re there, I break down and buy three succulents, plus pots. It’s a crowded Saturday morning and I’m un-showered and scoping out cacti alongside a crowd of Brooklyn hipsters, so basically it’s Coachella on a budget. $70.61 1:10 p.m. — Graze on the rest of last night’s frittata for lunch and have a spoonful of almond butter out of the jar. 4:15 p.m. — Run to Food Cellar near my apartment to get a baguette and some taper candles. $11.16 7 p.m. — I recently started hosting a table as part of The Dinner Party, which is a group of mainly twenty- and thirtysomethings who have experienced significant loss. TDP organizes tables of roughly eight to 10 people to have regular potluck dinners and connect over the shared bond and discuss life after loss. It’s an amazing group of people. In addition to the risotto I make, we have wine, beer, roasted broccolini, zucchini, salad, and a gluten-free chocolate cake with coconut cream. And bread. DAILY TOTAL: $167.60 DAY 3 10:30 a.m. — Standard breakfast and pack my coffee in a to-go mug to go out for the morning. 12:30 p.m. — Meet a friend at Peacefood Café on the Upper West Side for lunch. I get the Japanese pumpkin sandwich and a gingerade. $12.96 1:45 p.m. — Walk back to the N train from the Upper West Side. On my way, I stop in at Kiehl’s to restock on face wash. It’s expensive, but worth it. $31.57 1:55 p.m. — Also stop at CVS for dental floss and eyeliner. $12.50 2:20 p.m. — Swing back by Food Cellar on my way home to get some apples for the week and a few bags of Beanitos bean chips (my nutritionist got me hooked on them). My husband meets me there and I get his sandwich and a cool elderflower seltzer. We’ve been married for five years and have yet to combine our bank accounts, which is mostly on me. He’s even better with finances than I am, but I watched my mother support two deadbeat ex-husbands, so I still have some personal stuff to work through. In the meantime, we basically even out on the little things and consciously split the big things. It works out. $24.20 3 p.m. — Snack on an apple and almond butter while batch cooking steak for the week. It sounds very boring, but I’ve been working with a nutritionist since last September and it’s gotten me into a routine for breakfast and, during the workweek, lunch. I’ll switch things up from time to time, but it saves me from decision fatigue. 6:50 p.m. — Husband gets Two Boots pizza for dinner. I have a slice of the Meg and a slice of the classic cheese, plus one of the beers leftover from last night. 8:50 p.m. — I’m craving another kombucha and looking for a $5 in my wallet. My husband gives me his card and says he’ll cover the drink if I get him a rice pudding. DAILY TOTAL: $81.23 SEE THE REST OF THE STORY AT BUSINESS INSIDER
