There's now even more of a reason to eat like you live on the Mediterranean

[Mediterranean food]Flickr/jseita An eating regimen that incorporates foods that are part of the Mediterranean diet just got even more confirmation that it may be good for your health. In a study published Sunday in the European Heart Journal, researchers found that people with heart disease who ate more food associated with the Mediterranean diet — things like olive oil, fish, whole grains, and nuts — had fewer major heart problems than those who ate fewer of those foods. To reach that conclusion, the researchers asked 15,000 people what they ate every day, and based on their responses ranked them as either more in line with a Mediterranean diet or a western one. The Mediterranean diet is modeled off of foods commonly eaten in countries on the Mediterranean Sea. It's typically high in fruits and vegetables, fish, and whole grains like whole wheat and brown rice. In contrast, a western diet is characterized as higher in refined grains, sugar, and deep fried foods. Statistically speaking, people in the study who ate the most Mediterranean-style foods were also the least likely to experience severe heart problems like heart attacks, while people who ate the least of these foods were more likely to experience severe heart problems. However, the opposite conclusion could not be drawn for people with more western diets: People who ate the most western-style foods didn't necessarily have the most severe heart problems.  The researchers' findings suggest that if you want the most heart health benefits, it's best to try increasing your intake of Mediterranean-style foods rather than trying to avoid western ones. Previous studies have also linked the Mediterranean diet with a reduced risk of heart disease and breast cancer and still others have suggested the diet could have some potential memory-related benefits. The researchers who worked on the latest study pulled their data from a survey that was part of a drug trial investigating a compound called Darapladib. As part of the study, 15,000 people with coronary heart disease, a narrowing of the small blood vessels that supply blood and oxygen to the heart, responded to a survey about what they ate every day. (Of those participating, about 97% were on a special type of medication called a statin that aims to lower cholesterol.) Their responses were ranked based on how well they aligned with a Mediterranean diet. Almost four years later, the same participants took a follow-up survey. Based on their responses, they found that those that most closely followed a Mediterranean diet had fewer "major adverse cardiovascular events," such as a stroke or a heart attack, than those who followed it less closely or had more of a western diet. There are a few caveats to the study: Because it was self-reported, it's difficult to know if the people ate exactly what they said they did (portion sizes could vary, etc.). Plus, because it was recorded in a survey and not a daily food diary, the responses weren't as comprehensive as they could have been.  NOW WATCH: This longevity-linked simple salad helps people on a Greek island live past 100

Austria Re-introduces Checks on Border with Hungary

Austria has re-introduced checks on its border with Hungary to curb the flow of irregular migrants, AP reported on Monday. Austrian police have said that the number of attempts to smuggle illegal migrants into the country has increased since the Western Balkan migration route was closed to migrants earlier this year. The border controls began to apply on Monday morning, according to AP. Police haven’t said how long the controls will remain in force.   The closure of the Western Balkan migration route leading from Greece to Macedonia, Serbia and Hungary and then further north to Austria, Germany and Sweden has increased concerns that migrants and refugees might attempt to enter Austria from Italy. Therefore, continuous border controls will be introduced on Austria’s border with Italy at the end of May, the new Austrian Interior Minister Wolfgang Sobotka has said. Austrian authorities have been reinforcing the border crossing at the Brenner Pass with Italy in recent weeks in preparation for what the government expects will be a new wave of refugees and migrants making their way to central Europe via Italy. Border checks at the Brenner Pass are necessary “to continue to guarantee the security of Austria,” Sobotka said after a meeting with politicians in Tyrol federal region and Italy’s South Tyrol region over the weekend, according to thelocal.at. On Sunday, scuffles broke out at the Brenner Pass between Austrian police and several hundreds of pro-refugee demonstrators protesting the planned re-introduction of border checks at the Alpine pass.

An American journalist living and working in Turkey was barred from re-entering the country

[turkey]Murad Sezer/Reuters ISTANBUL (Reuters) - An American reporter living and working in Turkey was barred from re-entering the country and forced to fly home on Monday in the latest incident in which a foreign journalist has been denied entry or accreditation. Freelance correspondent David Lepeska, who wrote for the Guardian, Al Jazeera, Foreign Affairs and others, told Reuters that immigration officers at Istanbul's Ataturk Airport informed him an "entry ban" had been placed on his visa. It was not immediately clear why Lepeska, 42, had been denied entry but he is the latest journalist to be stopped at the border, heightening international concern about Turkey's record on press freedom. A senior Turkish government official told Reuters that Lepeska did not have a press card or a press visa and was not employed by a media company. "Individuals who go through the proper legal channels do not face similar problems," the official said, adding that the case was not a matter of press freedom but of legal procedure. Turkey says foreign reporters permanently assigned to Turkey should apply to the prime ministry for press credentials. After waiting for clearance for 20 hours, Lepeska was given the option of either returning to Italy, from where he had arrived, or flying to the United States, he said in a statement. He tweeted that he was boarding a plane home to Chicago. Lepeska's ban comes amid heightened sensitivity towards coverage of the Syrian refugee crisis and security operations against Kurdish militants.Instagram Embed: http://instagram.com/p/BEnxMRqy5D9/embed/ Width: 658px A German public television journalist and a Russian news agency representative were both turned away this month, and Turkish media reports quoted a Greek photographer working for a German newspaper as saying he was refused entry at Istanbul airport on Saturday. On Sunday, a prominent Dutch journalist who has criticized President Tayyip Erdogan was briefly detained. "I've been given no reason for the entry ban nor confirmation that this status is lasting or permanent," Lepeska said. In February, Norway's Aftenpost said Turkey had refused to accredit its correspondent. Der Spiegel of Germany withdrew its correspondent in March when his accreditation was denied. NATO member and European Union hopeful Turkey ranks 151st out of 180 nations in Reporters Without Borders' 2016 World Press Freedom Index. Foreign media outlets in Turkey have generally been spared the pressure faced by some local press, which have seen journalists prosecuted, as well as newspapers seized or closed in recent months and broadcasters taken off air. The government has repeatedly denied muzzling the press, saying that no media workers are prosecuted for their journalistic work and that such cases are part of efforts to weed out support for illegal militant groups. Fintech could be bigger than ATMs, PayPal, and Bitcoin combined

[A Bitcoin ATM is seen inside a bookstore in Acharnai in northern Athens, Greece June 30, 2015. REUTERS/Dimitris Michalakis ] We’ve entered the most profound era of change for financial services companies since the 1970s brought us index mutual funds, discount brokers and ATMs. No firm is immune from the coming disruption and every company must have a strategy to harness the powerful advantages of the new financial technology (“fintech”) revolution. The battle already underway will create surprising winners and stunned losers among some of the most powerful names in the financial world:  The most contentious conflicts (and partnerships) will be between startups that are completely reengineering decades-old practices, traditional power players who are furiously trying to adapt with their own innovations, and total disruption of established technology & processes: * TRADITIONAL RETAIL BANKS VS. ONLINE-ONLY BANKS: Traditional retail banks provide a valuable service, but online-only banks can offer many of the same services with higher rates and lower fees
 * TRADITIONAL LENDERS VS. PEER-TO-PEER MARKETPLACES: P2P lending marketplaces are growing much faster than traditional lenders—only time will tell if the banks strategy of creating their own small loan networks will be successful
 * TRADITIONAL ASSET MANAGERS VS. ROBO-ADVISORS: Robo-advisors like Betterment offer lower fees, lower minimums and solid returns to investors, but the much larger traditional asset managers are creating their own robo-products while providing the kind of handholding that high net worth clients are willing to pay handsomely for. As you can see, this very fluid environment is creating winners and losers before your eyes…and it’s also creating the potential for new cost savings or growth opportunities for both you and your company. After months of researching and reporting this important trend, Evan Bakker, research analyst for BI Intelligence, Business Insider's premium research service, has put together an essential briefing that explains the new landscape, identifies the ripest areas for disruption, and highlights the some of the most exciting new companies. These new players have the potential to become the next Visa, Paypal or Charles Schwab because they have the potential to transform important areas of the financial services industry like: * Retail banking
 * Lending and Financing
 * Payments and Transfers *
Wealth and Asset Management
 * Markets and Exchanges
 * Insurance
 * Blockchain Transactions
 If you work in any of these sectors, it’s important for you to understand how the fintech revolution will change your business and possibly even your career. And if you’re employed in any part of the digital economy, you’ll want to know how you can exploit these new technologies to make your employer more efficient, flexible and profitable.        [BII The Fintech Ecosystem]Thomson Reuters Among the big picture insights you’ll get from this new report, titled _THE FINTECH ECOSYSTEM REPORT: MEASURING THE EFFECTS OF TECHNOLOGY ON THE ENTIRE FINANCIAL SERVICES INDUSTRY_: * Why financial technology is so disruptive to financial services—it will soon change the nature of almost every financial activity, from banking to payments to wealth management. * The basic conflict will be between old firms and new—startups are re-imagining financial services processes from top to bottom, while incumbent financial services firms are trying to keep up with new products of their own. * Both sides face serious obstacles—traditional banks and financial services firms are investing heavily in innovation, but leveraging their investments is difficult with so much invested in legacy systems and profit centers. * Meanwhile, startups are struggling to navigate a rapidly-changing regulatory landscape and must scale up quickly with limited resources. * The blockchain is a wild card that could completely overhaul financial services. Both major banks and startups around the world are exploring the technology behind the blockchain, which stores and records Bitcoin transactions. This technology could lower the cost of many financial activities to near-zero and could wipe away many traditional banking activities completely. This exclusive report also: * Explains the main growth drivers of the exploding fintech ecosystem. * Frames the challenges and opportunities faced by incumbents and startups. * Breaks down global and regional fintech investments, including which regions are the most significant and which are poised for the highest growth. * Reveals which two financial services are garnering the most investment, and are therefore likely to be transformed first and fastest by fintech * Explains why blockchain technology is critically important to banks and startups, and assesses which players stand to gain the most from it. * Explores the financial sectors facing disruption and breaks them down in terms of investments, vulnerabilities and growth opportunities. And much more. _THE FINTECH ECOSYSTEM REPORT: MEASURING THE EFFECTS OF TECHNOLOGY ON THE ENTIRE FINANCIAL SERVICES INDUSTRY_ is how you get the full story on the fintech revolution.
