Syrian Refugees' Concert Moves Brussels Residents To Tears

Basel Khalil, 54, lives at the Lanaken refugee camp in Belgium. He used to teach flamenco and guitar at the Russian Cultural Center in Damascus, but was forced to flee from Syria when he refused to perform for president Bashar Assad. On Thursday, he found himself on stage again with several other Syrian performers for "Syrians Got Talent," a concert in Brussels organized by volunteers to showcase the artistic prowess of some of Belgium's newest residents. Lotus Abou Saeb, a 20-year-old from Damascus who now lives in Antwerp, played the violin. Talal, 27, is a drummer who made it from Suweida to Belgium in only 11 days. They played traditional Syrian music and also sang numbers by the Belgian musician Jacques Brel. Jens Muller, one of the event's three organizers, told Brussel Niews that he and his friends already been helping refugees for the past few months, but they noticed that refugees weren't really able to make use of their talents. The evening was meant to show that refugees "are people like us" and have talents just like us, he said.  "They have such a wonderful personal story and there is nothing done to help them integrate and get to know each other," Schams El Ghoneimi, an event organizer who works on the political staff in the European Parliament, told The WorldPost.  "We have to help them become Europeans," he added. "We have to do our best to tell people that Syrians are not terrorists, are not dangerous." The volunteers were blown away by the event's success, El Ghoneimi said. They offered entry to 200 people for 5 euros each and had to turn away many more.  Most of the audience, he said, was moved to tears during the performance. Before arriving in continental Europe, Khalil lived in Turkey, making ends meet by playing guitar on the street. "He was desperate," El Ghoneimi said; "as an artist, you don't have money." One day, some of Khalil's former students found him in the streets. Traveling together, they all made it to Belgium safely, El Ghoneimi said. Now, Khalil hopes to reunite with his wife and children, who are in Turkey. Abou Saeb's violin was damaged as she carried it during the crossing from Turkey to Greece last July, so the concert organizers lent her a new one. She practices two to three hours a day, Brussel Niews reported. The concert came at a particularly sensitive time for Brussels in the wake of the terror attacks at the city's airport and a major metro station. The concert was "very helpful to people who feel desperate" and afraid, El Ghoneimi added. He chose to hold the event at the Atelier Marcel Hastir because of the building's history. Hastir was a painter who used the space to hide Jewish children from the Nazi occupation during World War II. _Eline Gordts contributed reporting._ -- This feed and its contents are the property of The Huffington Post, and use is subject to our terms. An ISIS supporter has been convicted for plotting to kill US troops in England

[Junead Khan IS]REUTERS/Metropolitan Police/Handout LONDON (Reuters) - A delivery driver was convicted on Friday of plotting to kill US troops based in England by staging road accidents with soldiers' cars and then attacking them with knives and possibly a home-made bomb. Junead Khan, 25, a supporter of the Islamic State (IS) extremist group, was found guilty of preparing terrorist acts. He and his uncle Shazib Khan, 23, were also convicted of planning to join IS in Syria. Kingston Crown Court southwest of London had heard that Junead Khan had been visited four times by police trying to divert him from extremism but he had rejected their offers of help. Eventually he was arrested and searches of various addresses revealed evidence of what police said in a statement painted an alarming picture of his plans to attack U.S. soldiers based in Britain. "Specifically, he intended to stage a road accident to draw soldiers out of their car, before attacking them with knives and potentially detonating a home-made bomb," the statement said. In one message to a suspected accomplice in Syria, Khan told how he had missed an opportunity to kill Americans on his rounds in Bedfordshire, Norfolk and Cambridgeshire in central and eastern England. "When I saw these U.S. soldiers on the road it just looked simple but I had nothing on me or would've got into an accident with them and made them get out the car," he wrote. Police said they recovered British and U.S. flags stolen from a diner near Khan's home in Luton, north of London, which they believe were potentially to be used for a symbolic act during the attack. The two men are due to be sentenced on May 13.  (Reporting by Stephen Addison; editing by Paul Sandle) NOW WATCH: IAN BREMMER: Greece is headed for a humanitarian disaster

STUDY: Belgium is the largest contributor of foreign fighters to Syria in proportion to its population

[ISIS Islamic State Raqqa Syria]REUTERS/Stringer AMSTERDAM (Reuters) - French, Germans and Britons make up the highest number of foreign fighters in the Syrian rebel ranks from European countries, but Belgium is the largest contributor in proportion to its population, a Dutch study shows. Europeans fighting alongside Islamist groups in Syria and Iraq have been high on the agenda of European security concerns for several years. Returned volunteers have been involved in attacks in Paris and Brussels over the past 18 months, including last month's bomb blasts in the Belgian capital. The study, prepared by the Hague-based International Centre for Counter-Terrorism, said European Union countries should not be complacent about their citizens leaving to fight in the Middle East, even those that have seen little such movement. "Many terrorist organizations aim to undermine tolerant and pluriform, rule-of-law based societies," the researchers wrote. "Recognition of this risk and proper policies to counter it seem to be lacking." In total, up to 4,294 Europeans had gone to fight in Syria, of whom 30 percent had since returned and 14 percent were confirmed dead. About 17 percent of them were female and 23 percent were converts to Islam. Most came from urban areas or peripheral suburbs of the continent's cities. The totals showed big differences across Europe, with Belgium, home to the attackers in both last year's Paris shootings and last month's Brussels bombings, sending 41 fighters per million population. Not only did Belgium contribute the most fighters compared to its population, but only 18 percent of them had returned, compared to 50 percent of those who had left from Denmark. [ISIS foreign fighters ISW 3/27/16]REUTERS/Stringer Austria and Sweden followed in per capita terms. In absolute terms, France was the largest source country for fighters who had left to fight alongside Islamic State. The study counted more than 900 of them. Germany and Britain also contributed large numbers. Eastern European countries that have experienced little immigration and with small Muslim populations have contributed relatively few foreign fighters. The researchers were unable to find data for Greece and Hungary. (Reporting By Thomas Escritt; Editing by Angus MacSwan) NOW WATCH: IAN BREMMER: Greece is headed for a humanitarian disaster

Brazil's Massive Corruption Scandal Is Polarizing The Country

_Every week, The WorldPost asks an expert to shed light on a topic driving headlines around the world. Today, we speak with political scientist Mauricio Santoro, a professor at Rio de Janeiro State University, on the political crisis unfolding in brazil._  An escalating corruption scandal is engulfing Brazil's government. It's caused political deadlock and brought millions of people out in pro- and anti-government protests. On Tuesday, President Dilma Rousseff suffered a blow when the powerful Brazilian Democratic Movement Party, or the PMDB, quit the government's ruling coalition. Rousseff now faces a growing threat of impeachment on charges related to breaking budget laws, amid declining political and popular support. In a sign of the corruption problems that plague Brazil's politics, many of the officials accusing Rousseff of malfeasance are also the subject of graft allegations. The scandals have occurred as the South American country faces a myriad social and economic crises that include its worst recession in decades. While polls show that discontent with Rousseff is high, Brazil's protests are part of a complex political landscape in which government supporters and opponents are increasingly polarized. The WorldPost spoke with Mauricio Santoro, a political science professor at Rio de Janeiro State University, on the effects of the scandal on Brazilian society and what the future may hold for its politics. AFTER WEDNESDAY'S DEVELOPMENTS, HOW LIKELY IS IT THAT ROUSSEFF WILL FACE IMPEACHMENT? The biggest political party in Brazil left the government. That makes impeachment much bigger probability. I would say that today, the possibility that Dilma will be impeached is something around 70 percent.  She's losing the votes that she needs and she doesn't have the support of the majority of the population. She will have a very difficult time in the next weeks in Congress. SOME REPORTS INDICATE THAT BRAZILIAN PEOPLE ARE COMPLETELY OPPOSED TO ROUSSEFF, BUT HOW MUCH SUPPORT HAS SHE ACTUALLY LOST FROM VOTERS? Three years ago, Dilma was a very popular president. She had the support of around 75 percent of the population. But then everything began to change very quickly. The economy went from a good moment to a very bad one, and now we are in the middle of the worst recession in 25 years. Lots of corruption scandals started to appear. The president wasn't able to respond to all these big demonstrations and to all these big demands that several social groups in Brazil were presenting to her.  Nowadays, more or less 8 in 10 Brazilians say that the president is doing a bad job. She’s very unpopular, and that goes for all social classes and all the regions of Brazil. But there's a difference between the people that believe that she's doing a bad job, and the people who believe she should be impeached because of that.  > Around two-thirds of Brazilians are supporting impeachment right > now. Around two-thirds of Brazilians are supporting impeachment right now. It's a majority, but that also means that we have one-third of Brazilians -- quite a big group -- saying that they don't want an impeachment. The problem is that the division has become very polarized. This high level of polarization in the last couple of years in Brazil is more typical of Venezuela, of Argentina, but we are not used to it. Everybody’s a little bit lost. How do we deal with this deep political difference inside our intimate circle, inside the people that we love, inside the people that we have to deal on a daily basis? WHAT ROLE DOES THE MEDIA PLAY IN FRAMING THAT CRISIS AND DEBATE? Well, one of the consequences of the polarization is that people are very suspicious now in Brazil of institutions -- both the political institutions, such as the parties, Congress and the court, but also civil society institutions like the press. You have people on both sides of this polarization accusing these institutions of being partisan. It’s become sort of a black or white position. If you are supporting the government now in Brazil, you're basically saying that the media is full of liars and that you can’t trust them in any circumstance, and so on. But many people who are against the government are also blaming the media, saying that the media is not critical enough of the government.  What people are doing more and more now is using social networks in order to gather information and organize demonstrations. But the problem with that is that we don't have good gatekeepers on the social networks, and people tend to believe what they want to believe. If you are against the government, you are going to read the bloggers and you are going to search for the sites which are also very much against the government. If you are supporting the government, you're going to look for the people on the social networks who are also supporting the government. It’s become this very dangerous group think.  IT’S ALLOWED FOR ECHO CHAMBERS OF PEOPLE ONLY HEARING WHAT THEY WANT TO HEAR. Exactly, and this is a very serious problem now. If you look to surveys in Brazil right now about the people who are in demonstrations, they are very critical of the media. They are more critical if you go to the demonstrations that are supporting the government, but they are also critical of the media if they’re against the government. In Brazil, I don’t think you have one newspaper, magazine or TV station that is seen by both parties, both sides of this polarization, as a source of information that they can trust. THEY THINK THESE INSTITUTIONS HAVE BECOME MOUTHPIECES OF POLITICAL OR ECONOMIC POWERS ON EITHER THE RIGHT OR THE LEFT? I don’t think they’ve become the mouthpieces of these interest groups, but many people perceive them as pawns in this political game. HOW HAS THE DEBATE ABOUT PARTISAN AND POLITICAL DIVIDES SPLIT BRAZIL ALONG CLASS AND ETHNIC LINES? It’s a controversial issue, because pro-government groups are saying that the poor people in Brazil are supporting them and that the people who are conducting the demonstrations against the government are mostly middle class and upper middle class. Well, yes and no.  > If you go to the demonstrations you’re not going to see many poor > Brazilians. It’s complicated because 8 in 10 Brazilians are saying that they don’t trust the president and that the president is doing a bad job. We don’t have 80 percent of Brazilians in the middle class, so it cuts through all the major social groups in Brazil. But at the same time, the people who are taking a more active role in the demonstrations are mostly middle class. If you go to the demonstrations, you’re not going to see many poor Brazilians. This is one of the reasons that explains why these demonstrations are about issues such as corruption and not about issues such as police violence or racism or the lack of good sanitation. Those are an agenda that is not really strong in the middle class. WHAT COULD BRAZIL’S GOVERNMENT LOOK LIKE IF ROUSSEFF IS IMPEACHED? If she is impeached, the president would be our current vice president Michel Temer. He is a leader of the PMDB, Brazil’s biggest political party. He would probably implement a very strong austerity policy. This austerity policy would be very difficult to implement in Brazil -- it would be difficult anywhere. If it’s difficult in a country such as Spain, Portugal or Greece which have fairly good welfare systems you can imagine how hard it would in Brazil which does not have a welfare state. If a Temer government tries to implement an austerity government in Brazil, social reaction would be strong. One of the problems that they would face is that the trade unions are basically allies of Rousseff and the [ruling] Workers' Party. If they were in opposition they could be a very powerful enemy, they could go on strike or block roads in Brazil. At the same time, if Dilma remains president and isn’t impeached, the prognosis would also be very difficult, because she doesn’t have support of congress and is basically hostage to any decision that congress takes. So this is the political deadlock we're facing now in Brazil, and there is no easy way out. _This interview has been edited for length and clarity._ -- This feed and its contents are the property of The Huffington Post, and use is subject to our terms. EU-Turkey refugee deal: staff shortages and rights concerns pose twin threat

Greece calls for 20-fold increase in asylum officials as campaigners accuse Turkey of expelling refugees back to Syria Serious concerns have been raised about the viability and legality of the EU-Turkey refugee deal, just three days before its implementation, after rights campaigners alleged that Turkey has been deporting hundreds of refugees back to Syria on a daily basis in recent weeks, and the Greek asylum service said it needed more staff to make the deal work. In a double blow to the deal, the most senior Greek asylum official, Maria Stavropoulou, called for a 20-fold increase in personnel – just as Amnesty International alleged that unaccompanied children were among scores of Syrians illegally expelled from Turkey since January. Hours later, the UN refugee agency again called for a halt to the deal unless Turkey could ensure basic refugee rights. Continue reading...
