No Results After Tsipras’ Meeting with Institutions – Greek Talks to Be Repeated on Thursday

Eurozone Finance Ministers arrived for a Eurogroup meeting on Greece but exited shortly after since talks between Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras and the institutions ended without a conclusive result. Diplomatic sources said the talks will be repeated on Thursday. Tsipras made no statements to the press as he left the meeting with European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker, European Central Bank (ECB) President Mario Draghi and International Monetary Fund (IMF) Managing Director Christine Lagarde. According to Belgian Finance Minister Johan Van Overtveldt, in a doorstep statement arriving for the Eurogroup, everyone was waiting for the institutions’ report to begin the discussion. “First we must see what the institutions bring to the table. They have been negotiating very hard for the last 48 hours…” he said. “We need to reach a good deal for the Greek economy….that is important for every Greek citizen. We also need a deal that is good for the monetary union,” Overtveldt told reporters. Asked if it is time to present Greece with a “take it or leave it” ultimatum, he replied that he doesn’t like “these kind of deadlines.” He noted that it is important for the IMF to continue to be part of the Greek program, adding that it is wrong to say that the program for Greece has failed since no government has fully implemented it. Greece’s Migrant Naturalization Bill Expected to Pass in Principle But without ANEL Support

The government’s bill on Greek citizenship and naturalization of second-generation migrants looks set to be passed in principle by Greece’s Parliamentary plenum on Wednesday, though without the backing of junior coalition partner Independent Greeks (ANEL). The bill is supported by opposition parties “To Potami” and PASOK, opposed by New Democracy, Golden Dawn and ANEL, while the Greek Communist Party (KKE) will abstain by voting ‘present.’ New Democracy asked for a roll-call vote on articles 1 and 10, while PASOK Secretary Leonidas Grigorakos raised an issue of whether the government had lost its majority, since ANEL did not back the bill. Parliament Vice President Nikitas Kaklamanis clarified that an issue of majority loss does not arise during the vote of a bill in principle, unless the government raises a confidence issue. The vote in principle is expected to take place later on Wednesday evening, while a decision will be announced on Thursday regarding the dates of the debate before the plenum on individual articles. SYRIZA Political Secretariat: Creditors’ Proposals are ‘Absurd’

The institutions’ latest proposals are “absurd” and exceed the limits of Greek society’s endurance, the SYRIZA Political Secretariat concluded on Wednesday after a sweeping discussion on the proposals and the next moves for the Greek government and the party. Sources at the meeting reported harsh criticism on the creditors’ demands, as well as the government’s handling, after SYRIZA Secretary Tasos Koronakis and State Minister Alekos Flambouraris addressed the meeting. Speakers said that an agreement will be extremely painful for the Greek society and hard to support, since it contradicts the party’s positions, and several referred to resort to snap elections. They stressed that any agreement must make a clear reference to debt restructuring, otherwise it will be very hard to accept it. If Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras is able to come away with a creditors’ commitment concerning the country’s debt, many might have a change of heart when it comes to a vote, since it was considered a key issue for dealing with the crisis, party sources added. Other party members emphasized that any agreement must be sustainable and able to resolve problems, not create new obstacles and problems down the line. The meeting decided to convene SYRIZA’s Central Committee on Friday and the party’s Parliamentary group the following day to state their opinions on the agreement, if a proposed agreement is reached. Addressing the meeting earlier, Koronakis said that any proposed agreement must be evaluated by the party as a whole, based on SYRIZA’s mandate from the Greek voters, while Flambouraris said the government’s goal is a “decent” one.
