Short-term deal may save the economy

An agreement between Athens and the institutions that will kick the can down the road may offer a brief respite but will not provide a lasting solution to the Greek crisis. Nevertheless, it may be the only realistic way forward to avert an even worse outcome if the creditors and the government cannot find some common ground. As always, time is not on Greece’s side as the economy deteriorates and deposit outflows continue.

G7 leaders urge tough line on Russia at Alpine summit

By Jeff Mason and Noah Barkin KRUEN, Germany (Reuters) - Group of Seven (G7) leaders vowed at a summit in the Bavarian Alps on Sunday to keep sanctions against Russia in place until President Vladimir Putin and Moscow-backed separatists fully implement the terms of a peace deal for Ukraine. The Ukraine conflict and a long-running debt standoff between Greece and its European partners dominated the first day of the annual meeting hosted by Chancellor Angela Merkel at Schloss Elmau, a luxury Alpine hotel in southern Germany. Merkel is hoping to secure commitments from her G7 guests to tackle global warming ahead of a major United Nations climate summit in Paris in December.

Young Greek radicals don’t just want power – they want to remake the world

For the new generation of voters, identity and integrity has replaced ideology. So far, they have deferred to the old institutions – but soon they will have to invent new onesAt some point, as the Greek crisis lurches to its crescendo, Syriza – the radical left party – will call a meeting of something called a central committee. The term sounds quaint to 21st-century ears: the committee is so big that it has to meet in a cinema. You will not be surprised to learn that the predominant hair colour is grey. These are people who were underground activists in a military dictatorship; some served jail time, and in 1973 many were among the students who defied tanks and destroyed a junta. But they think, speak and act in a way shaped by the hierarchies and power concepts of 50 years ago. Continue reading...

Varoufakis Asks Merkel to Share a Message of Hope With the Greek People

In an article published on his personal blog on Sunday, Greek Finance Minister Yanis Varoufakis asked German Chancellor Angela Merkel to give his country a “Speech of Hope,” similar to that given by former U.S. Secretary of State James F. Byrnes in Stuttgart in 1946. According to Varoufakis, that speech given during the German post-war period was of great importance because it signaled the end of punitive approach, giving German people the chance to imagine growth, recovery and normalcy. Greece’s Finance Minister wrote in the article: “Seven decades later, it is my country, Greece, that needs such a chance.” He also explained the main reason Greece rejected its international creditors’ demands for more austerity measures in exchange for a bailout plan: “No offer of debt relief. No plan for boosting investment.” Varoufakis underscored the great need to restore Greeks’ morale, proposing that Merkel should give a vital “Speech of Hope,” while he promised to work hard and make his poverty-stricken country competitive again. Varoufakis will meet with German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble in Berlin this week.

According to the spokesman, Obama underlined that the Greek government and its international creditors can work together to find a solution without causing volatility in financial markets.

One-Third Of Large Investors Foresee Grexit

One-third of large investors predict a Greek exit from the euro currency as talks between Greece’s government and international creditors over the much-needed €7.2-billion bailout package have reached a deadlock, according to a Financial Times report. In a recent poll carried out by Swiss investment group GAM last month, 34% of 78 institutional investors, including international pension funds, private banks and intermediaries, expressed their concern about Greece, saying that the country may exit the Eurozone before the end of May next year. According to the private Swiss bank Julius Baer, there is a 50% probability of a Grexit. Julius Baer chief strategist Christian Gattiker said this will happen if Greece defaults on its debt installments, prompting new general elections and a referendum regarding their Eurozone membership. As for British asset management company Schroders, there is a 40% probability of Greece leaving the Eurozone. For this reason, chief economist Keith Wade recently disclosed that senior investment staff at Schroders are meeting on a weekly basis in order to talk about this potential, making plans about the position of investments.

€120m in Tips From Tourists This Year in Greece

Tourists who chose Greece for their holidays this year will leave around €120 million in tips during their stay, according to Greek newspaper “Kathimerini.” The amount is determined by taking into account that 50% of international visitors will leave at least 10 euros to the employees that will serve them during their stay. This means that for every 1 million, more or less, tourists who visit the country each year, the total amount of tips in the tourist sector can be increased or decreased by 5 million euros. If gratuities left by Greeks are added, then this resource may reach even higher levels. Hotel businesses and international bodies in Greece have already urged tourists to leave their tips in their own way. For example, a large international hotel chain took part in a 2014 campaign asking its visitors to voluntarily leave a tip for the maids in an enveloppe placed inside the rooms. In addition, the “American Hotel and Lodging Association” prepared a guide with a proposed gratuity regarding various services. For example, a tip of around $1 to $2 is suggested to the driver of a free ride, $1 to $5 for a car delivery during parking, $1 to $5 for the luggage, $1 to $5 daily to the room cleaners and 15-20% of the total bill for the bartender and waitress. The visitors who leave the biggest tips during their stay in Greece are mainly Americans and Germans. According to a relevant research conducted by an international travel agency, 3 out of 5 American tourists and 1 out of 2 Germans choose to leave tips. Hellenic Federation of Hoteliers President Yiannis Retsos, commenting on the research’s data, said that it is obvious that the income of employees is increased during the good years for tourism, while in years with a drop in tourism traffic revenues fall short. According to Retsos, for every 1 million additional visitors in Greece, 50,000 more jobs in tourism are created.

Le Monde: European Council President Says Debate on Greece is Also Political and Moral

European Council President Donald Tusk said on Sunday that the debate on Greece is not only economic but also moral, French newspaper Le Monde reported in an article titled “Ukraine and Greece on the G7 agenda.” Speaking during a joint press conference with European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker on the sidelines of the G7 summit in Bavaria, Germany, Tusk said that people have to stop believing that debtors have a “moral” behavior in principle and creditors are “immoral.” The debate on Greece “is not just financial. It is also political and moral,” he was quoted as saying by Le Monde. The issues of Greece and Ukraine are not officially in the G7 agenda but participating leaders are expected to discuss them on the summit’s sidelines. (source: ana-mpa)

Three Candidates Up for PASOK Leadership After President Steps Down

PASOK MPs Fofi Gennimata, Odysseas Konstantinopoulos and Andreas Loverdos will compete for the party’s leadership, after Evangelos Venizelos, who chaired the party since 2012, announced in a party congress late on Saturday he is stepping down. Following a lengthy speech, Venizelos said he will continue to be active in the party and Greek politics. PASOK members will now have to select one of the three contenders in a nationwide party vote next Sunday, June 14. After securing the backing of a minimum of 10% of the delegates, the three candidates took to the podium to present their views on the party’s future. PASOK was the junior coalition partner in the previous New Democracy-led government of Antonis Samaras, who lost the January 25 elections. (source: ana-mpa)

Roma Risk their Lives to Remove Scrap Metal from Burning Greek Warehouse

Groups of Roma are plundering a warehouse of recyclable materials in Aspropyrgos, Greece, where a major fire broke out on Saturday afternoon, jeopardizing their lives. Firefighters managed to control the blaze on Sunday, which started for unknown reasons in a private scrap metal warehouse. Local Roma groups, who collect scrap and resell it, are entering the charred building, risking respiratory problems and burns, as temperatures remain high. The problem became so serious that local authorities have asked police for assistance in order to keep them away from the building until the fire is put out. According to Greek police, the company running the warehouse is in the process of foreclosure and has stopped its operations since last April, while the owner has not been located.
