Could I have Sad or is winter just making me miserable?

Seasonal affective disorder is a type of depression that comes on in autumn and lifts in spring. So how can you tell whether you have it?Long nights, grey days – there is not much to love about winter. Christmas may bring a dash of festive cheer, but spring is still a long way off. So is winter making you properly depressed or just a bit blue? An annual dose of depression suggests that you may have seasonal affective disorder (Sad), a bona fide condition that was recognised even in ancient Greece. The physician Aretaeus of Cappadocia, writing in the second century, advised that “lethargics are to be laid in the light, and exposed to the rays of the sun (for the disease is gloom)”.In 1984, the disease was rediscovered in 29 patients by Norman Rosenthal, a South African psychiatrist. Eleven of his depressed patients improved when treated with bright light. Sad is now included with major depressive disorders in the DSM-IV, a manual published by the American Psychiatric Association and used by doctors to diagnose mental health problems. It affects 6% of us, and is four times more common in women of childbearing age. Continue reading...

Incalculable Damages in Flooded Evros, Locals in Despair

After a fierce battle with flooding waters, the evacuated Ormenio village in the Evros prefecture in Thrace was saved when local authorities built a one-kilometer levee on the outskirts of the village. The evacuated village that belongs to the Oresteiada Municipality was not flooded completely. One hundred houses, the total of residences, were saved by the levee. The mayor of nearby Soufli, Greece , Evangelos Poulilios, said that floods will not stop for the next two months as the area receives flooding waters from neighboring Bulgaria. Bulgarian dams canalize excess water to the Evros region. Poulilios says that this is a constant nightmare for area residents. Furthermore, the Evros River is flooding when there are extreme rainfalls. Municipal workers, staff from the Eastern Macedonia and Thrace District, army, police and fire brigade forces, and locals are working continuously to build new levees so that flooding waters don’t destroy homes and businesses. After the extreme weather conditions over the last few days, many Evros River levees have been severely damaged, allowing excess water to enter farms and villages. Authorities have advised that all farm animals and machinery be moved to safer areas. Most residential areas, farms and businesses have been put on alert for the remainder of December. So far it has been estimated that over 100,000 acres of land have been flooded, but it is hard to calculate damages at the moment. Locals speak of serious damages to agricultural businesses and homes, while most farmers are in despair seeing their crops completely destroyed by water.

Prosecutor to Decide Whether Golden Dawn MPs Can Vote

A special prosecutor will decide whether the seven Golden Dawn MPs held in pre-trial custody should be allowed to vote in the presidential election that starts on Wednesday. Prosecutor Nikolas Poimenidis — who handles cases relating to persons held at Korydallos Prison — had denied the seven GD lawmakers the right to vote in the vote of confidence in parliament in October. He has only allowed them to leave prison to attend court cases and appear in parliament when the House voted for the lifting of their immunity. Another prosecutor in Nafplio, Peloponnese, Greece, will decide if former Golden Dawn MP Stathis Boukouras, who is held in custody there, will be allowed to vote in the presidential election. Boukouras has severed ties with the party and is now independent.

The eurozone crisis

The longer the eurozone crisis drags on the bigger the benefit for parties suchas Ukip - if only Europe could recognise and learn from its mistakesIt’s funny how history repeats itself. The inconclusive general election in 2010 took place when the economy appeared to be on the mend and against the backdrop of a crisis in the eurozone prompted by Greece. As things stand, we could be in for a repeat performance in May 2015.Be in no doubt, what’s happening in Europe matters to Britain. The eurozone is perhaps one crisis and one deep recession away from splintering. The more TV pictures of rioting on the streets of Athens or general strikes in Italy between now and the election, the better support for Nigel Farage’s Ukip will hold up. Continue reading...

Lego Acropolis Exhibited in Athens

A model of the Acropolis built with 120,000 Lego pieces is being exhibited at the second floor of the Acropolis Museum in Athens, Greece , and has already attracted many young and older visitors. The mastermind behind this unique idea was Australian model maker Ryan McNaught who said that he wanted to spark children’s curiosity and make them want to find out more about ancient Greece and the Acropolis in particular. McNaught worked for hundreds of hours in order to capture the ancient monument’s every detail. The model depicts the monument’s ancient and modern history, and includes figures of significant historical personalities. There is a Lord Elgin dismantling the Parthenon while Phidias stands in the background, protesting. There is also Agatha Christie, Sigmund Freud, Elton John and even Melina Mercouri who greets the crowd with a bouquet of flowers, as she did in one of her most famous photographs, which is featured in Athens’ “Acropolis” metro station. Modern and ancient Greek history coexist in this unique mini-version of the Greek monument. The ancient Agora hosts a souvlaki restaurant and Elton John performs at the Odeon of Herodes Atticus while Lego figures of ancient Greeks are watching a play in the Theater of Dionysus. The Parthenon was built between 447 BC and 438 BC and was a temple dedicated to the city’s patron, Greek goddess Athena. The temple housed Athena’s large statue, created by Phidias, which was removed by Romans in the 5th century and has been lost ever since.

Fed Considers Time To End Free Money Pledge

By Philip BlenkinsopBRUSSELS (Reuters) - The U.S. Federal Reserve would give the clearest signal next week that its easy money stance is ending if, as some expect, it drops its two-year long pledge to keep interest rates close to zero for a "considerable time".The Fed, which meets on Tuesday and Wednesday, first inserted that wording in its post-meeting statements in December 2012, promising then to maintain its highly accommodative monetary stance for a considerable time after its asset purchase program ends and the economic recovery strengthens. Both have occurred. The U.S. unemployment rate slipped below 6.5 percent, a Fed mark of healthier recovery, in April and is now at a six-year low of 5.8 percent even as more people enter the labor force. Its asset buying ended in October, when all but one of its voting members opted to keep the "considerable time" language. The market has understood the term to mean at least six months, with current expectations for a first rate hike in mid-2015.Since October, the more hawkish Dallas Fed chief Richard Fisher has said the Fed should drop the pledge, while more moderate Cleveland counterpart Loretta Mester told Reuters the reference was "really stale".Some economists believe markets will take a change of wording in their stride, but others hark back to "taper tantrums" after the Fed first mentioned the idea of gradually reducing monetary expansion in May 2013."It has to be done at some point, but it's like taking off a sticking plaster. It's going to hurt," said Rob Carnell, chief international economist at ING, who questions central banks' propensity to use set terms rather than just rely on data.Carnell believes U.S. headline inflation may well fall below 1 percent in the March-May period, when seasonal adjustments would give a greater weighting for a weak oil price than at present."It's then a hard sales act to start hiking in May or June," he said.EU GROWTH SUMMITThe week, for many the final working days before Christmas and New Year holidays, will conclude with a European Union Summit focused firmly on the faltering economy. In an ideal world for some economists, France and Italy, the number two and three euro zone economies, would pledge more growth-driving reforms and budget restraint, providing cover for the European Central Bank to unleash new weapons to fight deflation.Pressure on the ECB to start printing money and buying sovereign bonds rose further last week as its offering of low- cost loans to banks drew only tepid interest.Banks have taken barely half the 400 billion euros ($497.4 billion) of loans on offer this year, implying they have little confidence in lending to the euro zone's backbone of small companies.ECB policymakers have dropped hints that it could move in the direction of money printing as soon as January, but a small group of countries led by Germany are opposed, fearing it would lead to reckless borrowing by debt-laden states."(ECB President Mario) Draghi has seven weeks to get everyone in line. I don't think he'll pull it off before Christmas," said BNP Paribas Fortis Chief Strategy Officer Philippe Gijsels. "We're very much driven by central banks into next year."As a reminder that the euro zone debt crisis is not fully extinguished, Greece's parliament holds the first round of its presidential vote on Wednesday. A likely third and final round is expected on Dec. 29.If Prime Minister Antonis Samaras's candidate does not secure the required three-fifths of votes, more than the government majority, it would trigger parliamentary elections, which polls show anti-bailout party Syriza would probably win.Samaras warned on Thursday Greece risked a "catastrophic" return to the depths of its debt crisis if his government fell, his comments driving Greek stock and bond losses. However, while Greek 10-year bond yields have passed 9 percent, with shorter-dated paper even higher, the yield on 10-year Italian bonds was around 2 percent on Friday and for Spanish bonds just below. The prospect of quantitative easing from the ECB, whose president promised in 2012 to "do whatever it takes" to save the euro, means this is not a repeat of 2010-2012, when fears of contagion to other EU members raged. Those hoping for respite from concern over a China slowdown will have an eye on a private survey due on Tuesday . It is expected to creep back into growth territory in December after stalling in November.(Editing by Larry King)Join the conversation about this story »
