Soccer-Woeful Greece stunned by Faroe Islands at home

ATHENS, Nov 14 (Reuters) - Greece's chances of reaching Euro 2016 are diminishing fast as their dreadful start to qualifying continued on Friday with a shock 1-0 home defeat by Group F minnows Faroe Islands, which leaves them bottom of the standings. Greece, European champions in 2004, again looked barely recognisable to the team that reached the last 16 of the 2014 World Cup as they struggled ...

Greek General Kostarakos Elected President of EU Military Committee

The Chief, Hellenic National Defense General Staff (HNDGS), since November 2011, General Mikhail Kostarakos, was elected for a three-year term at the highest European Union military body (EUMC) on Thursday. Kostarakos was appointed to his new position by the Chiefs of the Member States of the European Union Armed Forces in a vote held in Brussels, as part of the Conference of EU’s Military Committee. The Greek General will assume his new duties later this month and those will be added to the notice of the General Staff. According to sources close to the Greek Ministry of National Defense, Kostarakos was considered a clear favorite in the election, while the other candidates running for the position were a Spanish Admiral and a Finnish Lieutenant General. Earlier this year, he had also applied for the presidency of NATO’s Military Committee, without being elected. Kostarakos’ appointment as the head of the EUMC was welcomed by the Greek Minister of National Defense, Nikos Dendias, who in his statement underlined that “his success is also the success of Greece and our Armed Forces.” In addition, Dendias expressed his confidence over Kostarakos’ success in his new position, in which he will work productively and efficiently “for the construction of a new strategy for the Common Security and Defense Policy of the European Union towards a truly united Europe” from the first day he will take over his duties. Kostarakos was born in Thessaloniki in 1956 but originates from Mani, Peloponnese, and after he graduated from the Experimental School of the University of Thessaloniki he was admitted to Evelpidon Military Academy, from which he was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the Artillery, four years later, in 1978. He holds a Political Science degree from the Law Faculty of the University of Athens and an MsC in “Diplomatic and Strategic Studies.” He was promoted to General in 2011. EUMC is the highest military body set up within the Council. It directs all EU military activities and provides the Political and Security Committee (PSC) with advice and recommendations on military matters. EUMC is composed of the Member States’ Chiefs of Defence (CHOD), who are regularly represented by their permanent Military Representatives (MilReps). EUMC has a permanent Chairman, selected by CHOD and appointed by the Council.

Athens Was Insane Thursday Night

The streets of Athens were filled with riot police again on Thursday. Students gathered outside the University of Athens to demand lower tuition and protest education cuts. They were also commemorating the 1973 student uprising that led to the fall of the former military junta. That's when things got ugly. Riot police showed up and reportedly used tear gas and stun guns. The protests coincided with new economic data announcing the official end of Greece's 6-year recession. It's now the fastest-growing economy in Europe, but things aren't really looking good. Unemployment is still 26.6 percent, the economy is way smaller than it was before the crisis, and it could take decades to get back to pre-recession levels, BI’s Mike Bird reported. That, and a university-wide student lock-out ahead of the anniversary of the Athens uprising, led students to the streets. Corner to Northern Ireland. It comes to nothing. 8.29pm GMT Pepe has just been booked. It was a ludicrous foul. 8.27pm GMT How is it possible that Helder Postiga is still up front for Portugal? Its a national disgrace. 8.25pm GMT No way! 8.24pm GMT A Romania goal, you feel, is on the way. Northern Ireland need half-time. 8.20pm GMT Northern Ireland are increasingly under the cosh. They need to get above the cosh. Okay Jacob, Ill humor you. If I had to guess, I would say that Barry is eating a meatball grinder, while your sandwich of choice is likely a Bahn Mi, says Daniel Schulwolf. As for me, I generally vacillate between the Bahn Mi and the classic Italian, although as a resident of Boston I feel obligated to put a good word in for the Lobstah Roll. That is not what Barry was eating. 8.19pm GMT Romania should lead. Sanmartean went on a brilliant run through the Northern Irish defence, embarrassing McAuley with a lovely nutmeg, but instead of shooting past Carroll, he decided to be elaborate and roll it across to Stancu, who was unable to bundle it in! 8.15pm GMT Portugal dont appear to be doing much against Armenia. This is not necessarily news. 8.04pm GMT Tanasae volleys against the Northern Ireland bar! The rebound comes to Chipciu and he heads straight at Carroll. 8.03pm GMT Northern Ireland spring forward on the counter-attack and when Lafferty plays Brunt in, his shot from the left goes inches past the far post! 8.00pm GMT Germany are raining shots on the Gibraltar goal. Meanwhile Chiriches goes close for Romania but his overhead kick is straight at Carrolll. 7.58pm GMT The crowd goes wild! 7.57pm GMT The dream dies. Thomas Muller volleys home after a blunder by the Gibraltar goalkeeper, who failed to deal with a cross from Mustafi. He let it bounce against his near post and it came to Muller, who wasnt about to miss from eight yards out. 7.56pm GMT Northern Ireland are looking mostly comfortable so far. Carroll hasnt had much to do, although Romania have seen most of the ball. 7.54pm GMT Ireland had already scored by now against Gibraltar. Maybe Germany really are finished. 7.52pm GMT Roy Carroll is rubbing his head after being caught by a stray arm from Chipciu. The Northern Ireland goalkeeper isnt happy but he doesnt need any treatment, though. 7.51pm GMT I dont think Gibraltar have been in the Germany half yet. But its still 0-0! The shock is on the cards! 7.49pm GMT Serbia, of course, are playing in an empty stadium against Denmark. How is that going to affect them? It certainly wont be as intimidating for the Danes. 7.47pm GMT Germany still arent winning. What a load of rubbish. Two minutes in and Sami Khedira has even been tackled by a Gibraltar player. 7.45pm GMT Theyre playing football! Germany arent winning yet. 7.40pm GMT Teams are walking on to pitches. Greek FinMin Hardouvelis Sends Letter to Troika

Greece’s Finance Minister, Gikas Hardouvelis, sent a letter to the representatives of the country’s international lenders yesterday, explaining the positions on key issues that the Greek government is about to follow during the upcoming negotiations. The letter was in regards to the latest figures of the current budget’s implementation (a primary surplus for the second year in a row), as well as the structural changes that have been or will be applied. According to Hardouvelis, the Greek government foresees that there will be no fiscal gap in the coming year and that changes in social security funds, mass layoffs and the issue of low VAT rates are not necessary. According to Greek media, the Finance Ministry desires the current evaluation to be concluded as soon as possible, before the critical Eurogroup of December 8, and after that proceed with an agreement over the country’s steps on the next day after the memorandum, with a European Stability Mechanism (ESM) preventive credit line. Yesterday, though, International Monetary Fund (IMF) deputy spokesman William Murray, while answering journalists’ questions, revealed that the date for the Troika’s return to Athens is not yet finalized. Exiting a conference at the IMF headquarters in Washington, Murray said that he does not have a return date at the moment, adding that “at this point, we are discussing with Greek authorities what we need for the mission to return to Athens. This will determine the timetable. Preparatory work was already done when the IMF’s mission visited Athens in early October and discussed issues in the framework of the sixth assessment of the Greek program and we are now focusing on the successful completion of the assessment.” Furthermore, Murray avoided to make any comment over the rumored “new relation” between Greece and the Fund after the country exits its EU/IMF bailout program, underlining that the Greek side has not yet filed any request to the IMF on the matter. “Any such talk is academic. We have our own program ending in March 2016,” he concluded.

Greek football matches postponed again over violence, referee beaten in street attack

by  Associated Press Greek football matches postponed over violence Associated Press - 14 November 2014 13:14-05:00 ATHENS, Greece (AP) — Greece's football association says matches in the country's professional leagues have been suspended indefinitely after a referee was beaten in a street and needed hospital treatment for his injuries. Police said 45-year-old former FIFA referee Christoforos Zografos was severely beaten with wooden clubs early Friday by two men who approached him on a motorcycle in the western Kolonos area of the Greek capital. The association said it would not send referees to upcoming league matches until "immediate steps" were taken to protect match officials. Zografos is the assistant director of Central Referee Committee, which appoints match officials and is headed by retired Scottish referee Hugh Dallas. Football matches were suspended for a week in September after a fan was beaten at a third division match and later died. Second Day of Student Demonstrations in Athens Ahead of November 17 Anniversary

With no further tension and clashes was completed the second successive Pan-educational demonstration in Athens earlier today. Students, along with administrative employees and teachers, protested against the presence of police outside central university buildings in downtown Athens, accusing the government and Education Minister Andreas Loverdos in particular, for enforcing authoritarian policy. The participation, despite the constant rain, was mass and the demonstration started from Athens University Propylaea, which was unreachable due to the students’ mobilization, and moved towards the city’s central avenues to pass by the Parliament and be completed outside the historic building of the Polytechnic School. Earlier today morning in Thessaloniki, northern Greece, students occupied the administration building at the University of Thessaloniki as a reaction to yesterday’s police brutality in Athens. According to Greek media, the students removed the security guards from the building where the Deanship is located. At the end of today’s demonstration, students and administrative employees announced dynamic mobilizations in the following days, ahead of the November 17 Uprising anniversary, which will be completed on Monday with the established demonstration from the Polytechnic School of Athens to the US Embassy. Yesterday afternoon, in a similar demonstration held in Athens, students clashed with riot police outside the Law School of the University of Athens in the morning. During the clashes, two students were injured in the head by riot police batons, while later in the afternoon the tension rose again outside the Polytechnic School, when police made extended use of chemicals in order to prevent students from entering the building where they planned to hold a general assembly.
