PAOK beats host Ergotelis 2-0, opens 5-point gap over Olympiakos in Greek league

by  Associated Press PAOK beats Ergotelis 2-0 in Greek league Associated Press - 2 November 2014 15:48-05:00 ATHENS, Greece (AP) — Klaus Athanasiadis scored twice to lead PAOK to a hard-earned 2-0 win over host Ergotelis in the Greek league Sunday. The win allowed the Thessaloniki team to open up a five-point gap over second-place Olympiakos after the defending champion was held to a 0-0 draw Saturday at Asteras. In the 42nd minute, Stelios Kitsiou won the ball at midfield and sent a 40-meter pass for Athanasiadis to slot home. A bad defensive clearance in the last minute of second-half injury time allowed Athanasiadis to thread the ball just inside the post for the second goal. Also, Panathinaikos beat Atromitos 2-0, Panetolikos overcame an early deficit to beat Xanthi 5-2, while Niki Volos drew 0-0 with Kerkyra and Panthrakikos was also held to a scoreless draw by OFI. They discussed the issue of the advancing Islamic State, the situation in Syria and Kurdistan and the possible threats for the security of Turkey. They also discussed the situation in the Aegean Sea and developments in the Exclusive Economic Zone of Cyprus. They decided that from now on they will show determination over issues concerning Turkish rights in the Aegean Sea and protection of those rights inside Turkish waters. Also, they claim that the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus has given them the rights to secure Turkish interests in TRNC waters, according to the report. Meanwhile, the presence of Turkish ship Barbaros continues to provoke by remaining inside the Cyprus Exclusive Economic Zone and is accompanied by a Turkish submarine, much to Greece’s and Cyprus’ disaffection. Analysts say, that Barbaros is Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s way of answering to the alliance between Greece, Cyprus and Egypt over the EEZ. According to the report citing Turkish newspapers, television reports and websites, the meeting of the Turkish national security council lasted a record ten hours and twenty minutes, with Turkish officials trying to come to a satisfying conclusion. Turkish media say that the previous longest national security council meeting lasted nine hours, and it took place on February 28, 1997.

Kohl savages successors over euro, Russia in new book

Berlin (AFP) - Former German chancellor Helmut Kohl has lashed out at his successors again in a new book coming out this week, blasting their policies on Russia and the euro. Just weeks after being quoted as belittling his protege Angela Merkel as having been unable to "eat properly with a knife and fork" when she started out in politics, Kohl launched fresh attacks in excerpts printed Sunday in the weekly Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung. The 84-year-old elder statesmen known as the father of German unity says the centre-left government of Gerhard Schroeder, his immediate successor from 1998 to 2005, made crucial missteps in allowing debt-mired Greece into the eurozone and bending the fiscal rules of its stability pact. These two decisions "are among the gravest mistakes that we in the EU and the euro area" saw in recent years.  "What happened here is really a disgrace in German politics and at the same time a betrayal of German-French cooperation which should never -- as happened here -- been allowed to be used against the stability pact."The pact was left in tatters after EU finance ministers in 2003 agreed to effectively suspend the rules for France and Germany, despite their repeated breaches of its ceiling for public deficits.Kohl, the longest serving German chancellor, dismissed any criticism of his part in setting up the euro common currency, calling it a "tight clamp holding Europe together". He is to present the book, titled "Out of Concern for Europe," in Frankfurt on Monday with European Commission chief Jean-Claude Juncker. It hits a sour note ahead of celebrations on November 9 of the 25th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall, which paved the way to German unification a year later. In a chapter on Russia, Kohl also criticises Western leaders for "isolating" Moscow during the Ukraine crisis. The decision by the Group of Seven club of rich nations to hold a summit without Russia in June was "drastic and depressing." "The West must, just as much as Russia and Ukraine, be careful not to squander everything that we achieved in the past," Kohl said.Kohl has filed suit against a separate book published last month based on over 600 hours of taped interviews that he conducted with a journalist who was meant to ghost-write his memoirs before the project was scrapped. In it, Kohl belittles the role of protesters in the fall of the Berlin Wall and rips into Merkel.Join the conversation about this story »

Cyprus on Alert Over Jihadist Terrorist Acts

Authorities in Cyprus are on alert after receiving information from foreign secret services that Islamic State jihadists are planning to hijack airplanes in Cyprus. A newsit report says that the airports of Larnaca and Paphos are on alert based on information by foreign secret services that IS jihadists plan to hijack a Cyprus Airlines plane and take hostages. The information says that jihadists plan to take the plane to an airport in Syria or Iraq that is under IS control and then use the hostages to negotiate with Great Britain. The jihadists will use the hostages in order to demand that Cyprus will not allow Great Britain’s Royal Air Force to use the British bases in Cyprus to launch air raids against the areas in Syria and Iraq where jihadists have control. According to the report, secret services say that the IS has similar plans for Greece and Great Britain. Cypriot Police have been put on alert in the airports of Larnaca and Paphos and are ordered to do thorough searches on all passengers and baggage. The official alert was terminated yesterday, however police remain on alert as Cyprus’ secret services continue to gather information on suspects who are related to the jihadists. In both airports, passengers who are European citizens but are of Arabic origin are thoroughly searched. Secret services say that some of them plan to cross to the Turkish-occupied zone and cross to Syria from there. Cypriot authorities say that in the last few days they performed searches on cargo at the Limassol Port. A cargo ship with destination Syria was searched to see if it was carrying any materials that can be used to make explosives. It was released after no such materials were found.

Thessaloniki Rolls Red Carpet for 55th Film Festival

The 55th Thessaloniki Film Festival in Greece, started yesterday with actress Pinelopi Tsilika presenting the ceremony. President of the Thessaloniki Film Festival Dimitris Eipidis gave a short opening speech in the context of this year’s festival which includes a tribute to Greek cinema, which became 100 years old this year. Thessaloniki Mayor Yiannis Boutaris also gave an opening speech for the festival that reached its 55th year and is one of Thessaloniki’s most popular international events. A total of 150 films will be shown this year, including the Greek films. The opening ceremony had two big absences: that of special guest Hungarian director Kornél Mundruczó, whose film “White God,” a study on human relations, was the first screening; absent also was German-Turkish director Fatih Akin. Other than the tribute to Greek cinema, the 55th Thessaloniki Film Festival will also include homages to German actress Hanna Sygulla, Serbian director Zelimir Zilnik, Swedish director Roy Andersson and American director Ramin Bahrani. Many world premieres will be shown at the five cinemas of the festival, namely Olympion theater and the four theaters in the port, named after the directors John Cassavetes, Tonia Marketaki, Stavros Tornes and Frida Liapa. There will first be screenings of the new films by directors Fatih Akin, Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne, Antrei Zviangkitsef, Kristian Petsolnt, Ole Christian Madsen and more. The festival ends on November 9, with the awards and the closing ceremony. These Fascinating Maps Show The Origin Of Words We Use All The Time

U.S. playwright Rita Mae Brown said: "Language is the road map of a culture. It tells you where its people come from and where they are going." That quote comes to mind looking at these fascinating European etymology maps of various commons words posted by reddit user sp07, which provide a kind of cultural commentary on Europe. The word for "church" shows the influence of ancient Greece: "Bear" appears to be influenced by Russia, where largest brown bear population in Europe can be found. Notice the dominant word literally means "honey-eater."Another reddit user noted that "pi" is a prefix for "beer" in several European countries while the "pi" in the Mandarin Chinese word for beer,  啤酒 pi jiu, is a loan word from Europe."Apple" has a lot of diversity: Notice how the word in Finland and Estonia may come from a Indo-Iranian origin."Orange" is an interesting one. In the west it comes form Sanskrit while the dominant word in much of eastern and northern Europe comes from a word meaning "apple from China.""Garoful," the ancient Greek word for "rose," only remains in northeastern Italy. Most of Europe derives "pineapple" from the Guarani language, which is an indigenous language of South America, although the U.K. (and consequently the U.S.) get the word from Latin.Tea comes from China, naturally, except for a few Latin holdouts in eastern Europe. This one is the word for "cucumber," which may be even more diverse than "apple": Now Watch: These Maps Prove That Americans Speak Different Languages // <div>Please enable Javascript to watch this video</div>SEE ALSO: 13 Southern Sayings That The Rest Of America Won't Understand Join the conversation about this story »

British Woman Runs Donkey Rescue in Corfu

When Judy Quinn moved from the UK to Corfu, Greece , she was not expecting to get involved with donkeys. One day she found a donkey who had been left to die, and since she had a garden, she decided to bring it home and take care of the wounded animal. Now, a few years later, Judy runs the Corfu Donkey Rescue (CDR) shelter, where she hosts 58 donkeys. As she noted, this is a major problem on the Greek island. Donkeys who are too old and wounded to be used by farmers are left to die alone. Due to the heavy objects that these animals are forced to carry, they usually suffer bone-related health problems. Quinn now lives next to the stables and takes care of her loving animals. As she said, they also show their love and appreciation for what she is doing. She enjoys taking care of them and often worries about what she is going to do if she is not able to do it at some point. Thankfully, many animal rights organizations have shown interest in supporting her cause. CDR has reached out to students and veterinarians. Any kind of help is welcome, said Quinn. In addition, people can adopt a donkey, and that is a way to help all the donkeys at the shelter and have a more personal contact with their selected animal. The shelter’s website offers the opportunity to select a donkey from photos or by visiting the shelter. People who decide to adopt, receive the relevant certificates and postcards with updates regarding the donkey’s progress. The cost of adoption is 90 euros per year. (Photo: Stamatis Katapodis)
