Turning Ideas Into Action for the Mediterranean

Those who know me know that I've always said that actions are more important than ideas. Actions are concrete foundations for change. And it's no secret my home, Greece, and the greater Mediterranean region are in desperate need of action these days. But is anyone interested in taking action to sort out the mess that Europe has made of itself in recent years? Is anyone willing to step up and contribute in a real, tangible way to alleviate the crises that my home country and her neighbors have dealt with for years now? Is anyone willing to take action, to hit restart and to give the Mediterranean a second look? At the Clinton Global Initiative [CGI] annual meeting last month, the answer was "Yes." I had the honor of standing alongside President Bill Clinton at the CGI annual meeting to announce our plan to take action and create CGI Mediterranean -- the first-ever Clinton Global Initiative in Europe. I've always admired the spirit of CGI, which compels individuals to turn ideas into action. In the past 10 years, the Clinton Global Initiative has secured 2,900 Commitments to Action around the world, improving the lives of over 430 million people in more than 180 countries. I've had the privilege of participating in CGI for many years now, and this unique spirit of action is what I seek to reinvigorate in Greece and the entire Mediterranean region as the founding sponsor of CGI Mediterranean. CGI Mediterranean, which will be held in June 2015, will inspire its own commitments to address issues that transcend borders in and around the Mediterranean - including economic opportunity, new means of production and fostering entrepreneurship in agricultural and environmental innovation. CGI Mediterranean comes at an important time. There are an increasing number of barriers preventing the Mediterranean people from reaching their full potential: unemployment, poverty, poor infrastructure and low morale, to name a few. Just this past year, unemployment neared 30 percent in Greece and Spain, youth unemployment reached 50 percent. Many outside the region see these problems, and attribute them to stereotypes about things like work ethic. That's why I was so happy to see President Clinton remind the participants in this year's CGI that the average Greek citizen works 25 percent more hours a week than the average German citizen! When presented with opportunity and support - the Greek people have no shortage of ideas and energy. Just last year, I sponsored 12 students to participate in CGI University, and supported their projects to improve their communities back in Greece. These projects have already had a remarkable impact. Michail Fragiadaki, for example, wanted to make agriculture more efficient and attractive to young Greeks. To do so, he introduced technology to remotely control watering, provide information on weather and environmental conditions - all from a smartphone. Georgios-Marios Papadopoulos, another young Greek whose project I supported through CGI U, worked to develop cost-effective high-tech robotics for the Greek medical community that would allow for greater freedom of motion and increased dexterity in surgery. At the same time that desperate stories and damaging stereotypes were making headlines around the world, these young people were taking charge and making change. They are a testament to what is possible in Greece, and a hint of what I believe we can accomplish at CGI Mediterranean. That's why I sponsored an additional 25 students this year, and it's why I will sponsor their projects back in Greece once again. As President Clinton reminded us at CGI, we cannot assume we know everything about Greece, Spain, Italy or the rest of the Mediterranean. And we cannot assume that we don't have an impact. We do. And at CGI Mediterranean, we will. When I think of my home in the Mediterranean, I think of what the word means in Greek - "the sea in the center of the earth." And for centuries that's what Greece has been - the center of the region and the heart of innovation. I can think of no better place to bring CGI's legacy of leadership and action to Europe than Athens. I believe attendees will be able to see the Mediterranean region the way that I see it: A region with a rich history, and - if enough people take action - an even richer future. Stay tuned to the Clinton Global Initiative website for more news, and join us in June 2015 to turn ideas into action for the Mediterranean region, and all of Europe.

Unicef: Dramatic Increase in Child Poverty

Child poverty is on the rise in Greece since 2008 and the crisis outbreak, while the average family income went 14 years back, in 1998 levels. The alarming figures emerged from a Unicef report entitled “Children of the Recession.” Child poverty in Greece has increased from 23% in 2008 to 40.5% in 2012, while the age group from 15 to 24 is the most affected by the crisis. The percentage of youth who do not study, work or follow a program of technical training in the country has increased to 20.6% in 2012 from 11.7% in 2008. The report shows that 2,6 million children have sunk below the poverty line in the world’s most affluent countries since 2008, bringing the total number of children in the developed world living in poverty to an estimated 76,5 million. Since 2008, child poverty has increased in 23 out of the 41 countries analyzed. In Ireland, Croatia, Latvia, Greece and Iceland, rates went up by around 50%. In the United States, where extreme child poverty has increased more in this downturn than during the 1982 recession, social safety net measures provided important support to poor working families but were less effective for the extreme poor without jobs. Child poverty has increased in 34 out of 50 states since the crisis started. In 2012, 24,2 million children were living in poverty, a net increase of 1,7 million from 2008. Child poverty actually fell in 18 countries, markedly in some cases. Australia, Chile, Finland, Norway, Poland and the Slovak Republic reduced levels by around 30%. “The absence of a bold strategic response by the Member States could have a negative impact in the long term for societies,” Unicef concluded, warning for the possibility of a slowdown in population growth as younger people avoid creating their own families due to their worsening financial state.

The Air Force Captain That Touched Greek Hearts

Sotiris Stralis, a Hellenic Air Force captain, moved all of Greece with a message he delivered to President of the Hellenic Republic Karolos Papoulias during the October 28 national parade in Thessaloniki. During an air show yesterday at the northern Greek port city of Thessaloniki to mark the anniversary of the October 28 national holiday, the captain said “Lift your head up.” Stralis and his genuine message has touched the hearts of many citizens who have reproduced his phrase in social media. As he stated this morning on a Greek morning show, he wanted to pass the message of the Hellenic Air Force team he represented. He said that this moto is what Greeks should feel: pride and respect. “We know that Greek people honor the country’s Air Force. We would like to thank all Greek people who responded to our message yesterday,” he stated. Stralis has flown more than 1,700 hours, most of which at an F-16 aircraft. He has been awarded the title of the Best Pilot by NATO in 2011 and he is a pilot of the Air Force F-16 ‘Zeus’ team that specializes in air shows. Yesterday, he literally “danced” in the skies of Thessaloniki for more than 12 consecutive minutes.

German Green Party Member: Europe in Danger if Tsipras Becomes PM

Speaking at a forum organized by the Foreign Correspondents Association in Berlin, Germany’s Former Vice Chancellor and member of the Green Party Joschka Fischer expressed his worries over a possible electoral victory of Alexis Tsipras and his leftist party SYRIZA in Greece. “If the president of SYRIZA became Prime Minister, he would be able to drag along the entire European south to dangerous leftist paths, and that would be fatal for the European Union,” Fischer argued, adding that as he reads, “Tsipras wants to put an end to the policy of austerity.” Germany’s number two between 1998 and 2005, under Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder, revealed that he personally asked the current German government what they will do in such a scenario “and they answered that they would have to negotiate with him,” wishing them “good luck with that.” Further in his speech, Fischer extensively referred to the current situation in Greece, which is in the cyclone of the crisis, accusing at the same time Chancellor Angela Merkel for turning the economic crisis into a political one. According to Fischer, everything changed in late 2008 when Nicolas Sarkozy called German Chancellor Angela Merkel and British Prime Minister Gordon Brown to draw a common policy in the European Union. From the beginning “Merkel made it clear that she did not desire a common policy but only a loose cooperation,” he concluded, sideswiping that there was a “German finger” in the Greek crisis.

Constellation Signs on Ancient Greek Wine Cup?

The 2,600-year-old wine cup — called “skyphos” in ancient Greek — that is on display at the Lamia Archaeological Museum in Greece is thought to depict constellations, according to a new analysis. Until now, archaeologists believed that the drawings on the piece of ancient pottery were depicting animals. Now researcher John Barnes, a classical archaeology doctoral candidate at the University of Missouri, believes that they actually depict constellations, a Live Science article says. Barnes suggests that the interpretation of the drawings in the particular skyphos may lead to a better understanding of how ancient Greeks viewed astronomy. It can also lead to a new reading of other similar depictions on ancient pottery. The two-handled wine cup dating back to 625 B.C. was found near the acropolis of Halai, north of Thebes, Greece, from the same era. One handle and nearly one-third of it is missing. It has drawings of a bull, a snake, a small dog or rabbit, a large dog, a scorpion, a dolphin and the front half of a lion or panther. The grouping of the snake, the rabbit and the dog looked like constellations, Barnes said. He also said that he found the collection of animals atypical: The dolphin is out of place with the other animals and the scorpion is an uncommon choice for such decorations. The position of the snake under the dog and rabbit is also atypical. Barnes believes that the bull is Taurus, the rabbit is Lepus, the scorpion is Scorpius, the dolphin is Delphinus, the lion is Leo, the snake is Hydra, the dog is Canis Major or Canis Minor. He suggests that the constellations are arranged according to the four seasons they appear and not as they are lined in the sky. For example, the grouping of snake, rabbit and dog represent winter, and the dolphin, lion and a part that’s missing signify summer. The Live Science article concludes with Barnes’ assumption that the wine cup shows a generalized representation of time throughout the year.
