Samaras to Request Vote of Confidence On Monday

The outcome of the Samaras – Venizelos meeting concluded in the mutual decision of the government to request a vote of confidence next Monday. This was decided by the two leaders in order to give an end to rumors about early elections and in order for the government to get the “green light” to proceed with its work as normal, until at least next year. According to government spokeswoman, the election of the President of the Republic will take place as usual in February. According to a statement made by Greek government representative Ms. Sofia Voultepsi, the election of the new President of the Republic will proceed as provided by the Constitution and the constitutional practice, which is one month before the end of the current President’s duties in February of 2015. She further stated that at the beginning of the new regular summit of Parliament next Monday, the government would immediately seek confirmation of the confidence, in accordance with the Article 84 of the Constitution. Syriza party replied to this sudden move by the government, stating that the government is “in a state of deterioration and is following a strategy of the bad Memorandum policy it chose. Let’s hope that Mr. Samaras will have the courage to come to parliament to defend the policy he has agreed on with Ms. Merkel.” Voultepsi earlier today speaking to private TV channel ANT1, dismissed reports on disagreements in the coalition government and reports on her resignation. “There are people who have nothing to do with journalism and instead of referring to politics, they are engaged in political rumors,” she said. Moreover, she added that the role of Greece ‘s Prime Minister’s advisor Chysanthos Lazaridis is not questioned by Greek Finance Minister Gikas Hardouvelis or by anyone else, adding that Lazaridis will be present at the negotiations with the Troika, if it is necessary. In the meantime, the Minister of Finance was unable to go to his office this morning due to a viral infection that has made him ill since yesterday. Mr. Gikas Hardouvelis appeared at the Ministry at 5pm and therefore did not meet with Mr. Lazaridis at all.

Germanys malaise shows eurozone cant cut its way to prosperity

The experiment German designed, German engineered and German exported with austerity has failed, writes Larry ElliottEurope has a problem and it is called Germany. The crisis that has bedevilled the single currency area for the past five years started with the smaller countries on the periphery of the eurozone: Greece, Ireland, Portugal. Then it moved to the bigger countries of Southern Europe: Spain and Italy. Next the malaise spread to the second biggest economy: France. All the time, though, the sense was that Germany the powerhouse of the eurozone was immune. Exports from the factories of Bavaria and North Rhine-Westphalia were booming. Business confidence was high. Growth was solid. While the core of the eurozone remained secure, there was nothing really to fear. Continue reading...

1 arrested, 2 injured as Olympiakos fans clash with police at Malmo airport

by  Associated Press Olympiakos fans clash with police at Malmo airport Associated Press - 1 October 2014 10:47-04:00 MALMO, Sweden (AP) — Swedish police say Olympiakos fans scuffled with police and security guards upon arrival at Malmo Airport ahead of a Champions League match against Malmo FF on Wednesday. Police spokesman Patric Fors said the trouble started when one of the Greek supporters was arrested for shoplifting at the airport. Fifteen other supporters tried to set him free, clashing with police and security guards. Fors said two guards were taken to hospital with minor injuries. He said only the 25-year-old Greek suspected of shoplifting was arrested. The other fans were allowed to board buses to the stadium for the Group A match. Inside The Dangerous Underground World Of Bounty Hunters And Bail Bondsmen

Several years ago, Italian photographer Clara Vannucci was hanging out in a bar in TriBeCa, New York when she met a burly, Greek man name Bobby Zouvelos. The two struck up a conversation and Vannucci, who had recently photographed inside the notorious Riker’s Island jail, explained to Zouvelos what she had seen. Zouvelos mentioned that he and his brother George worked at jails too; he was a bail bondsman. Intrigued by the concept— Italy doesn’t have bail bondsmen — Vannucci asked the man to introduce her to his world, a rarely discussed underworld of bail bondsmen, defendants, and bounty hunters. After following George and Bobby Zouvelos for the better part of two years, Vannucci collected the work into a recently released book, titled "Bail Bond." Vannucci shares some of her work with Business Insider here, but you can check out the rest at her website or in the book.Bail bondsmen act as guarantors in the criminal justice system. They are a combination between insurance salesmen, social workers, and private policemen. This is George Zouvelos, a bail bondsman based in Brooklyn. Vannucci was introduced to Zouvelos by his brother Bobby, who she met in a bar. Zouvelos is known as the "Bail Boss." When someone is arrested and can’t afford to pay their bail, Zouvelos offers to pay it in exchange for a fee. This fee is non-refundable even if the defendant does everything right, appears in court, and is found innocent. See the rest of the story at Business Insider

Atletico desperate for win in Juventus clash

Madrid (AFP) - Last season's Champions League finalists Atletico Madrid are in desperate need of three points to kick-start their European campaign when Italian champions Juventus visit the Spanish capital on Wednesday.La Liga champions Atletico were surprisingly beaten 3-2 in their first group match away to Olympiakos a fortnight ago, conceding as many goals as they did in the whole of the group stage last season in the process. However, Diego Simeone's men appear to have rediscovered their defensive solidity in the past week with back-to-back wins and clean sheets, including an impressive 4-0 thrashing of the previously unbeaten Sevilla at the weekend.Simeone's return to the touchline after a six-game ban in all competitions appeared to galvanise the team and supporters alike, and the Argentine has called on the fans to recreate the atmosphere for the visit of Juventus."The atmosphere is what we need in all the games at the Calderon," he said."There was a perfect communion between what the team offered and what the fans experience in the stadium. It felt like there was a mountain of us on the pitch."Despite Atletico's Champions League struggles in Greece, they have managed to beat Real Madrid twice already this season in the league and Spanish Super Cup.And Simeone believes those games should give his side heart that they can take down Massimiliano Allegri's side, who have won all six of their games so far this season."There is a difference when you are competing across a whole season compared to the situation in one game."When we play against Madrid, Barcelona or Juventus it is clear we have a chance because it is just one game."Atletico were also aided by the return of striker Mario Mandzukic against Sevilla as the Croatian played with a mask protecting a broken nose he suffered just 11 days previously against Olympiakos. However, Los Rojiblancos may have to do without influential captain Gabi as he limped off at half-time at the weekend with an ankle injury.Juventus' bid to make up for the disappointment of bowing out at the group stages last season got off to a good start on matchday one as two goals from Carlos Tevez gave them a 2-0 home win over Malmo.Italian international Claudio Marchisio believes the match against the Swedish champions was an encouraging sign and is hoping to take a huge step towards winning the group in Madrid."We haven’t been able to make the step up in Europe over the last three years. We started well in our first game at home, where in previous seasons we missed important opportunities," he told the club's website."Now we’ve got a tricky game in Madrid. We need to also try and pick up a result there because we’d gain a lot of confidence from beating a great team like Atletico."Opening up a six-point gap on them would represent a big step forward towards qualification, even though the result in Athens showed us there are no easy games in this group and that Olympiakos are also capable of giving us a run for our money."Juve will once again be without Andrea Pirlo as he is yet to feature this season due to a thigh injury.Join the conversation about this story »
