Two winners of the Venice Film Festival talk about the Ukraine crisis

by  Federico Grandesso War was one of the main themes featured at the latest annual Venice International Film Festival. New Europe spoke about the crisis in Ukraine with two winners of the main competition. Swedish movie director Roy Andersson, who won the Golden Lion prize, said: “It’s a risky situation, there is the Ukraine crisis, but I’m not so afraid about that. I’m more afraid of what can happen in the Asian sea with countries involved like Philippines, Japan, China and Malaysia. This area has a lot of oil under the sea. Now in Sweden, they are talking about Russia, but I don’t find it very dangerous and it’s very interesting to note that the Soviet Union collapsed without blood – it was a very peaceful collapse. And it’s also interesting to remember that the day after Sweden started to send weapons to the Baltic countries. I think that it was a very aggressive attitude, the west started the aggression. We have to calm down. Historically Sweden has always been afraid of Russia because of what happened to Finland.”  A more eastern prospective to the crisis was offered by Russian master Andrej Koncaloskij, winner of the Silver Lion for the Best Director. He explained, in his own personal volcanic and irreverent way, how war relates to art. He said: “The best art is created during epidemics and wars, in time of peace art is quite poor.”  Koncaloskij also spoke about Western values in relation to Russia. He said: “The European ‘way’ is not universal and democracy in poor country brings chaos and dictatorship while in rich countries democracy brings prosperity. In poor areas, it’s a disaster. South Africa is the best example. Russia is medieval country even now and it’s wonderful because it’s rich and free and it’s not politically correct. It’s just crazy and that’s why it’s great. Europe is divided between Latins and Greeks. The Greeks are Dionysian, they drink, sing, cry and they don’t have rules. The Latins like rules and this is why a common understanding is very difficult. Poles will never understand Russians or Serbs and they are both Europeans.”  According to the Russian director, Europe’s decline is evident. He explained: “I think then that Euro-centrism is over. Europe will not survive without Russia, but Russia will survive without Europe because the EU will not have any kind of supply of drinking water. Russia is the biggest source of drinking water in the world, we have five big rivers. In 15 years,  wars will be fought over drinking water. Peace is impossible, there is a constant war somewhere and today after the fall of the Soviet Union there were 300 wars and the production of weapons are tripled. Western Europe can’t accept the uncomfortable truth that European values are not universal and that the word freedom means nothing in some countries and that you can’t explain what it is because Confucius philosophy is about duties and not rights. It’s naive to think that the American dream will flourish everywhere. I also see some good political philosophers in Europe like Vaclav Klaus who explained why he is sceptical of Thilo Sarrazin in Germany. They were ostracised because they were dangerous for the politically correct understanding of life.”

SDOE Ready to Announce 20 More Lagarde List Names

The Greek Financial Crime Unit (SDOE), along with several tax inspectors, have been investigating the case of the Lagarde List, a list of names of Greek people with Swiss bank accounts. After the investigation, SDOE is expected to announce at least 20 more names. Until now, the inspection of people in the List has yielded approximately 12 million euros. Alexis Tsipras recently announced that inspectors had only been able to check 500 out of the 2,062 names on the List. However, even if the inspection yields more than 2 billion euros, after the money is finally taxed the amount will not surpass 800 million euros. The prosecutors in charge of the case have arranged for 35 inspectors to check the files of each person on the List. However, the process is moving really slow because the inspectors need around 3-4 months in order to fully inspect each file and even then there may be no proof of tax evasion. Christine Lagarde, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) Managing Director and former French Finance Minister, sent the List to the Greek authorities in 2010.

Greek Culture Ministry Releases Caryatids’ Full Body Photographs

New revelations regarding the ancient tomb of Amphipolis have everyone on the edge of their seats. The Greek Culture Ministry has finally released full-body photographs of the two caryatids “guarding” the tomb. After removing three rows of limestone which had been used to seal the wall, archaeologists were able to fully uncover the two caryatids reaching a height of 2.27 meters. They statues are dressed in long chitons and long fringed dresses with folds. They are also wearing sandals, decorated with red and yellow color, while their toes have been sculpted with great detail. The statues are placed on marble pedestals, reaching up to 1.33 meters in length, 0.68 meters in width and, for now, 0.30 meters in height. The front of the pedestals have been sculpted with stanchions following the pattern of the wall lining. The distance between the two pedestals is 1.68 meters, the same length as the opening of the first septal wall where the Sphinxes are located. The pedestal of the eastern caryatid has a distinct red color. Meanwhile, while removing the soil from the area around the caryatids, archaeologists found parts of their hands and arms. While excavations progress, archaeologists have discovered that the tomb is larger than they originally thought. In fact, today, September 21, it was announced that the third chamber held a door which probably leads to another, fourth chamber. Archaeologists working on the site have noted that excavations in the fourth chamber are expected to be very difficult.

UEFA Europa League: Results and Interesting Stories

One win, a draw and a loss is how the three Greek teams fared in Europa League’s first round games. PAOK Thessaloniki snatched a 6-1 win against Dinamo Minsk at home, Asteras Tripolis grabbed a point with an 88th minute 1-1 draw against Besiktas in Turkey, while Panathinaikos lost to Dynamo Moscow in Athens 1-2. Asteras Tripolis For Group C’s first leg of games, Asteras Tripolis presented a highly organized and passionate team against experienced side Besiktas, from whom they ultimately robbed a point with an 88th minute blistering one-touch strike from Argentinian midfielder Facundo Parra. This was the Arcadian team’s first ever European Cup group stage match and subsequently its first ever point. Astreras Tripolis, Besiktas, Tottenham and Partizan Belgrade all sit at 1st place as the latter two teams also drew in their game. PAOK Thessaloniki The Black and Whites defeated Dynamo Minsk with an impressive 6-1 score. Athanasiadis was handed the MVP award as he scored a hat-trick in less than 20′ mid-way the first half. Before that, Nikolic scored an own goal for the game’s opener. Papadopoulos and Tsandaris, with their first European goals for, PAOK secured the triumph with two second-half goals. The Thessalonians top Group K, while Fiorentina sits at second place after its 3-0 win over French club Guingamp. This was Dimitrios Salpingidis 70th performance in the Europa League (previously called UEFA cup) which puts him in 3rd place of players with the most caps in the history of the tournament. At the same time, Stefanos Athanasiadis sits at first place of all PAOK players of the past as the ultimate top scorer in European Cups with 14 goals. Dimitris Salpingidis also has 14. Panathinaikos Dynamo Moscow landed in Athens without its star player Mathieur Valbuena but that did not stop them from walking away with the much-needed three points. The Greens tried, but their young and inexperienced roster was far too inferior to the wealthy Russian club. A 1-2 loss with hope-returning Dinas goal in the 63rd minute was all Panathinaikos was able to show for this game. This was Panathinaikos long-awaited return to European games. In the past, several impressive wins had made the Athenian team the most recognizable Greek club. But in the last few years, its massive debt forced the club to release all of its star players and start off fresh with many players drawn from its academy. A Greek in Turkey Also worth mentioning is Avraam Papadopoulos, who scored with his new team, Trabzonspor, in the last seconds of the game against Metalist Kharkiv to fetch the much-needed three points.
