Young Farmers Receive Financial Aid

The Greek government has launched a new program for young people wishing to live in the Greek countryside and become involved with agriculture and farming. Greece’s national file for EU agricultural funds has allotted young farmers upwards of 400 million euros over the next six years. More than 18,000 young people are projected to receive financial benefits of approximately 50,000 euros. The goal is to incentivize agricultural work in the Greek countryside. Specifically, 300 million euros will be divided amongst 16,000 upcoming farmers in order to facilitate their entry into agriculture. Additionally, 100 million euros will be directed towards more than 2,000 new agricultural start-ups. Meanwhile,  the new national agenda regarding the Common Agricultural Policy, a system that divides the country into three zones and re-adjusts production values of individual Greek producers, has already proved very favorable for young farmers. The policy ensures that young farmers under 40 years of age will receive a 25% bonus over other farmers. By withholding 2% of the funds, the estimated cost of the program amounts to roughly 50 million euros per year. A maximum cap on subsidies will also be implemented.

FT: Tsipras Presented as the Next Greek Prime Minister

“As you would expect from the leader of Greece’s radical left opposition party, Alexis Tsipras has many pungent criticisms of eurozone economic policy: demand is too weak; fiscal discipline too severe; debt repayments too high; and, consequently, growth is elusive – even non-existent,” reported Kerin Hope and John Thornhill in a recent Financial Times article. But the two journalists went on to note that, “unlike many of the populist politicians” in Europe, SYRIZA leader Alexis Tsipras claims to be pro-European and wants Greece to remain in the Eurozone. “His stated aim is to reform the EU rather than smash it and he has been trying to sell this message abroad.” “We need a new European deal if we want to overcome this crisis,” the opposition leader said in a Financial Times interview. “The crisis is not just about Greece or Ireland or Portugal. It is a structural crisis of the European Union.” According to the Financial Times journalists, SYRIZA’s win in the recent European elections and his current lead in the opinion polls over government coalition parties have “prompted Mr Tsipras to drop his disruptive image and recast himself as Greece’s prime minister in waiting.” During a recent appearance at the Ambrosetti Forum panel in Italy, Tsipras met with key European intellectuals and challenged some of Europe’s leading policy makers to rethink their outlook.

Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew on Four-day Visit to Thrace

Residents of Orestiada, in Greece’s northern prefecture of Thrace, warmly welcomed Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew, who began on a four-day visit to the area on Saturday. Bartholomew was welcomed at the Orestiada Square by Metropolitan Damaskinos of Didymoticho, political, church and armed forces representatives from Orestiada and neighboring Soufli, as well as by cultural organisations, children and people scattering flowers. Deputy Foreign Minister Kyriakos Gerontopoulos represented the government. Also attending were Deputy Education Minister Alexandros Dermetzopoulos, Deputy Interior Minister Giorgos Dolios and MP Marinos Ouzounidis. In his address, the Ecumenical Patriarch referred to Thrace’s rich ecclesiastical history and its strong historical connections with the Ecumenical Patriarchate. He later went to the Greek Orthodox Church of Saints Theodore, where he presided over a celebratory liturgy. Earlier, on his way to Orestiada, the church leader stopped at a border guardhouse, where he blessed the officers and soldiers present.

Ancient City Discovered in Western Greece

Michalis Chrysochoidis, the Greek Minister of Infrastructure, Transport and Networks, visited the archaeological site of Alikyrna near Missolonghi in western Greece, where an ancient city was recently unearthed during construction work for Ionia Odos. The ancient city, located next to the construction site, sits in the area of Agios Thomas. Government officials were perplexed by the discovery of a previously-unknown city so large it stretches for many acres. According to sources in the Greek media, the first findings suggest an ancient urban center which crosses over to the Ionia Odos construction site. Further excavations, research and mapping are expected. The Central Archaeological Council of Greece and the Ministry of Culture are now responsible for the site. According to Michalis Chrisochoidis, only a small part of the city has been uncovered. “Everywhere we dig, we find something ancient,” reported the archaeologists to Greek government officials. The Greek state, meanwhile, is concerned about the discovery’s location; sitting so close to the construction site, work on Ionia Odos has been forced to stop. Chrisochoidis noted that the procedures need to speed up, in collaboration with the Greek Ministry of Culture, in order to ensure that the Ionia Odos project is not delayed.

13 Alexander-Era Figures Who May Be Buried in the Amphipolis Tomb

While evidence shows that archaeologists are one step away from uncovering the “big secret” of Amphipolis, Greece,  people are speculating on who is buried under Casta hill. Archaeologists and other world experts have supported different theories on who is the important ‘tenant’ of the Casta Hill, and we present them to you below: Olympias Mother of Alexander the Great, wife of Philip II, king of Macedon, and daughter of King Neoptolemus of Epirus. Cassander had her murdered by stoning in 316 BC. (Read full story) Androsthenes, Laomedon and Nearchus Alexander the Great’s three admirals are closely connected to Amphipolis. Androsthenes and Laomedon were born there while Nearchus was either born or exiled in Amphipolis. Cassander Son of Antipater, did not follow Alexander’s army in Asia. He stayed with his father in Macedonia and used to fight with Polyperchon but eventually allied with him, when he killed Alexander’s son, Heracles. In 311 BC, he killed Alexander’s second son and successor, Alexander IV, along with his mother Roxana. He died of edema in 279 BC. Polyperchon He served under Philip and Alexander. He returned to Greece from Asia in 324 BC -after the death of Alexander- and was appointed regent of Macedon by Antipater in place of the latter’s son, Cassander. Philip II of Macedon Some do not believe that the tomb of king Philip was located in Vergina. Meanwhile, others claim that ancient Greeks might have built a second monument in Amphipolis to commemorate the king. Heracles Son of Alexander who was murdered with his mother, Barsine. Alexander IV The twelve-year-old son of Alexander and Roxana who was murdered along with his mother by Cassander. If his grave is located in Vergina, then it is possible that someone buried him and disposed of his mother’s corpse. Alexander the Great Alexander sailed from Amphipolis to Asia. However, it is almost certain that his tomb is located in Alexandria, since people such as Julius Caesar have visited his burial site. Some, however, insist that his bones were moved to Amphipolis by Olympias, while others argue that it is a cenotaph “waiting” to receive him, or a second monument in his honor. Cenotaph or Memorial This view is supported by the various influences on the monument’s construction as well as its size. Hephaestion General of Alexander’s army. Professor Theodoros Mavrogiannis believes that the Casta hill tomb belongs to Hephaestion and claims that the tomb was built in 325 BC by order of Alexander himself. Roxana The wife of Alexander became the mother of his son in 323 BC after Alexander had died. Roxana fled to Epirus in order to be saved by his descendants, and later went to Amphipolis, where she was murdered by Cassander in 310 BC. Antigonus Monophthalmus General of Alexander’s army, was proclaimed king in 306 BC and demanded that Cassander gives him Macedon. He died eighty-one years old and was buried with royal honors. Philip Arrhidaeus Son of king Philip. After Alexander’s death, he was proclaimed king by the Macedonian army as Philip III of Macedon. He was killed by soldiers who defected against Olympias. His bones were transported by Cassander to Aegae.
