Alleged Sale of ‘Navagio’ Beach a Fraud

The alleged sale of 15,000 acres of land around famous “Navagio” beach on Zakynthos island in the Ionian Sea is characterized as a fraud of massive proportions. Greek newspaper “Ethnos” published information proving that the case was a fraud. The alleged deal mentioned areas that cannot be sold since they include forest land, streams and roads and are held without title deeds, at prices well below the actual property value. According to the article, the case is going to be examined by the judicial authorities since the newspaper implies that politicians, Forest Service officials, the state mortgage company, tax inspectors and notaries are allegedly involved in the sale, the cost of which is estimated at 9 million euros. According to the sale contract, dated May 7, 2014, the actual value of the land was estimated at 17.2 million euros. The potential buyer, the Emir of Qatar, through his company Pimana, would get a coastal area of unique beauty, which includes the Navagio beach, for 600 euros per hectare although its actual value is estimated at around 1,100 euros per hectare. Furthermore, the article says that the sale contract should be void, since the property does not belong to the alleged owner, George Charos, as he does not hold any legal deeds to this property, while part of the property belongs to the Church of Greece. Charos is a heir of the Flampouriaris family, which owned the land with a Venetian decree just before the Venetians lost sovereignity of the Ionian islands in the late 18th century. However, as lawyer Dionysis Gouskos stated, “there are no titles of ownership, except from a Venetian decree, but ownership cannot be justified by decrees. This decree must be translated by the Foreign Ministry, as it uses an unknown Venetian dialect and it does not clearly state the property boundaries or the owners’  names.” The case is even more complicated as a trial for arson is still pending against the alleged owner and seller, Charos.

Greece Places Last on EU Social Justice Index

According to the Social Justice Index, developed by researchers at the German Bertelsmann Foundation, Greece holds the last place in the rankings of the 28 EU member states. Sweden was placed first, followed by Finland, Denmark and the Netherlands. Deutsche Welle published an article on the subject, explaining that high unemployment in Greece was one of the most important factors for the low score. This factor has been strongly affected by the economic crisis. The article also stated that mostly young people have been affected by social injustice in the crisis-hit countries. The gap in social participation opportunities between the rich northern countries and the poorest countries of southern Europe has grown to such an extent that it now constitutes a threat for European integration, claims the study that was published today, September 15, by the Bertelsmann Foundation. The study also stressed that while the economy is showing signs of stabilization, the level of social justice in most EU countries has reduced. “If EU social disintegration is consolidated or exacerbated, the future of the European integration project will be jeopardized,” noted the researchers. Overall, the EU Social Justice Index examines 35 criteria based on six fields: poverty prevention, access to education, access to the labor market, access to health services, intergenerational justice and social cohesion through discrimination tackling. From now on, the research will be conducted annually.

Greek Police Arrest Major Heroin Trafficker

Greek Police have arrested two men, a 41-year-old Greek and a 34-year-old Albanian, in Spata, for trafficking large quantities of heroin in Attica and other regions of Greece. According to police, the 34-year-old Albanian was arrested in a garage which was used as a workshop and drug storage space. The 41-year-old Greek was arrested while driving a car in the same area and is considered one the country’s major heroin traffickers. The car used by the traffickers had a built-in storage space for the drugs in the place of the airbag which had been removed. The lid would open only when the mirror and window buttons were pressed simultaneously. Greek Police seized more than 18 kg of heroin, some powder of unknown chemical composition weighing over 11 kg, an AK-47, two pistols, two grenades, 26,130 euros, two precision scales, 12 mobile phones and complete laboratory equipment for the standardization and packaging of drugs.

Venizelos Asks For Change In Electoral Law After Presidential Elections

The economic and political developments topped today’s agenda between Greek Prime Minister Antonis Samaras and Government Vice-President Evangelos Venizelos. Venizelos asked for a change in the electoral law and attacked the opposition, saying that SYRIZA tells “easy lies” while the government tells “the hard truth.” According to PASOK sources, Venizelos asked for a change in the electoral law, by abolishing the 50-seat bonus for the majority party, after the upcoming election of the President of the Hellenic Republic in March. The result of this situation, noted Venizelos, is “to have a false and uneven picture, and can be strategically mislead as a nation.” Talking about the unrest of some parliamentary groups of the coalition parties, whose members often complain about government decisions as in the case of ENFIA, Venizelos explained that “the parliamentary groups are required – and I speak for PASOK but I imagine New Democracy as well – to communicate with each other, listen to the citizen’s anguish and transfer it to the government and parliament. We are reaching the end, and fatigue is obvious and understandable,” he added. “The question is what can be done to improve our lives and not what can lead us to collapse,” Venizelos explained. Speaking about the upcoming Troika audit in Athens in a few weeks, Venizelos was optimistic that “we can convince our lenders that we are in a reform path, because we have achieved both financial reform targets,” adding that in any case, the government will not give a false impression. Finance Minister Gikas Hardouvelis, who attended the two leaders’ meeting, briefed them on the informal Eurogroup last Friday.

Greek Man Takes Gold Coins to The Grave

There is a Greek expression that “you cannot take money with you when you die.” It usually refers to those who are very stingy in sharing their money with their loved ones when they are getting old. There is a case, however, where an old Greek man did not follow this rule and took his gold coins with him to his grave. It all happened a few days ago, in a village located in the boundaries of Achaia and Ilia prefecture in the Peloponnese, Greece. When a family had to remove the body of an old man from his grave, it came about an unprecedented sight. Besides the old man’s bones, who had passed away five years ago, his family found gold coins. Apparently, the deceased had swallowed the coins before dying and they were in his stomach when he was buried. The family’s rather sad event of unburying their loved grandfather was followed by astonishment and wealth.

US basketball is at the summit and could soar higher, but Coach K knows danger always lurks

by  Associated Press US basketball reigns in Spain, awaits Rio Olympics by BRIAN MAHONEY, Associated Press - 15 September 2014 12:48-04:00 MADRID (AP) — It feels like so long ago, though it's been only a decade. The U.S. was the three-time defending Olympic champion, but had become a mess of a basketball program. The Americans had embarrassed themselves at home in the 2002 world championship, and when they haphazardly put together their team for the 2004 Olympics, nobody should have been surprised if they lost. That's exactly what happened. Puerto Rico blew them out 92-73 in their opener. Now the Americans run perhaps the most stable program in the world, gold medalists at both the men's and women's, senior and junior levels. Yet Mike Krzyzewski will prepare as if their opener in Rio de Janeiro is as uncertain as the one in Athens. "I think we can lose our next game," Krzyzewski said. "I mean, that's the way we prepare because we know how good everyone is." The Americans are the best, proving that again with a 129-92 victory over Serbia on Sunday to win the Basketball World Cup. That gave the U.S. consecutive world titles to go with its back-to-back Olympic gold medals. The Americans have won with powerhouse rosters in the Olympics and beatable ones in the worlds, and they could go to Brazil with their best one yet. LeBron James, Carmelo Anthony and Chris Paul would be welcomed back if they want a shot at a third straight Olympic gold. Kevin Durant and Kevin Love might want to return after pulling out this summer. And there are plenty of guys on this year's team who showed they will earn consideration, from tournament MVP Kyrie Irving and fellow guards James Harden, Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson, to forwards Anthony Davis and Kenneth Faried. And don't forget how much better Derrick Rose could be in two years after struggling during this tournament in his return after missing most of the last two seasons following two knee operations. If nobody could beat a depleted U.S. team this summer, how could anyone touch that team in 2016? "If we come back with a lack of focus," Curry said. "We can't take anything for granted. This is big-time competition, teams recharge and refuel in these two years and get ready for the Olympics. So if we — whatever group suits up and flies down to Brazil for the Olympics — if we're not prepared with the same mentality that we had here and Istanbul and London and Beijing, we're capable of being beaten. So we have to come with that same focus and energy that we did and keep this dominance going." This was supposed to be the summer where it could end. Spain had nearly beaten stronger U.S. teams in the last two Olympic gold-medal games, and this time would have home-court advantage and a roster of all the players it wanted while the Americans would settle for whoever would come. Another matchup in the gold-medal game was widely expected until France stunned the Spaniards in the quarterfinals. "Spain's a magnificent program, a magnificent team, and it just takes one bad day. One bad day. And so what we're trying to do is make sure we don't have bad days," Krzyzewski said. "And so far it's worked out." The Americans have had only one under Krzyzewski and USA Basketball chairman Jerry Colangelo, a loss to Greece in the semifinals of the 2006 world championship, their first tournament. They have won 63 straight, counting exhibitions, and are 74-1 since Colangelo took control and revamped the program. The U.S. always had the best possible talent, even when it was losing six times between 2002 and '04. Now the Americans may also have the best leadership and infrastructure, and it's made the gap with the rest of the world seem larger than ever. There will be 11 spots open in 2016, assuming Colangelo sticks to his previous plan to save a spot for Paul George, who broke his right leg during training for this tournament. It's hard to envision any challenger to whatever team is picked, with Spain and Argentina getting old, and Serbia and Lithuania maybe a little young. Maybe France, which followed last year's European title with a bronze in Madrid even without Tony Parker, could be the team if the San Antonio Spurs point guard returns. But even after watching this team average 104.6 points and win by 33 per game, Krzyzewski will insist it's possible. "I think one of the reasons we've won is because we do have that respect. We know how good everyone is. It's beautiful basketball," he said. "We prepare like crazy and we learned from the international community. We get better." One in Three Greek Employees Earns 300 Euros

According to figures by the labor union of the General Confederation of Greek Workers (GSEE), one in three employees in the private sector earns 300 euros per month, working under flexible forms of employment (part-time work, job rotation). GSEE scientific director Savas Robolis stated that the high unemployment rates brought by the economic crisis, force more and more private sector employees to resort to flexible employment. This has created a new generation of workers; the generation of 300 euros. Average annual earnings in Greece for 2014 amount to 21,930 euros compared to 24,472 euros in Slovenia, 22,740 euros in Cyprus, 34,584 euros in Spain, 38,964 euros in Germany, 44,377 in Ireland and 49,256 in France. Opposition party Democratic Left (DIMAR) noted that the new figures highlight the dramatic state of the Greek economy and employees in the most emphatic manner. DIMAR claims that following austerity policies that lead to economic suffocation, further decrease of wages, reduction of the purchasing power of Greek households and deterioration of labor relations, has been proven to be a failure. The left-wing party notes that growth and competitiveness cannot be supported by exhausted workers while tackling the economic crisis won’t be achieved by reducing wages and violating labor rights.

Divers sure of new finds from 'ancient computer' shipwreck

Athens (AFP) - Archaeologists set out Monday to use a revolutionary new deep sea diving suit to explore the ancient shipwreck where one of the most remarkable scientific objects of antiquity was found. The so-called Antikythera Mechanism, a 2nd-century BC device known as the world's oldest computer, was discovered by sponge divers in 1900 off a remote Greek island in the Aegean. The highly complex mechanism of up to 40 bronze cogs and gears was used by the ancient Greeks to track the cycles of the solar system. It took another 1,500 years for an astrological clock of similar sophistication to be made in Europe. Now archaeologists returning to the wreck will be able to use a new diving suit which will allow them to more than double the depth they can dive at, and stay safely at the bottom for longer.  - Double the diving depth - The Exosuit, built in Canada by Nuytco Research, will permit divers to reach depths of 150 metres (492 feet) and still perform delicate tasks, says archaeologist Theotokis Theodoulou. The suit, which resembles a puffy space suit, "expands our capabilities", Theodoulou told AFP as the team set off for a month-long expedition to Antikythera, which lies between Crete and the Peloponnese."I'll be able to grasp, pluck, clench and dig... for several hours," he said.Archaeologists believe many other artefacts are yet to be discovered in and around the wreck. Up to now they had only been able to operate at a depth of 60 metres. The mechanism was found with a spectacular bronze  statue of a youth in the wreck of a cargo ship apparently carrying booty to Rome, and researchers are certain that other items on board still remain to be discovered."We have good signs that there are other objects present," said Angeliki Simosi, head of Greece's directorate of underwater antiquities, after exploratory dives in the area in 2012 and 2013."There are dozens of items left, this was a ship bearing immense riches from Asia Minor," added Dimitris Kourkoumelis, another archaeologist on the team. The archaeologists also hope to confirm the presence of a second ship, some 250 metres away from the original discovery site.Antikythera, which now has a population of only 44, was on one of antiquity's busiest trade routes, and a base for Cilician pirates, some of whom once captured and held the young Julius Caesar for ransom. He later had them all captured and crucified. - Monumental statues - The Greek team is assisted by Brendan Foley, a marine archaeologist from the renowned Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution at Massachusetts, which was involved in a dive to the wreck of the Titanic.Foley has helped in outings to identify ancient shipwrecks over the last five years."We may find one or more monumental statues that were left behind in 1901, in the mistaken belief that they were rocks," Foley said.As well as the new Exosuit, the Antikythera expedition will also use robot mapping equipment and new advanced closed-circuit "rebreathers", which will allow divers much more time underwater."We will have more bottom time than any previous human visitors to the site, because we dive with mixed gas rebreathers," the expedition's website said.  "Each diver will have more than 30 minutes of bottom time per day, and will enjoy greater mental acuity and a larger safety margin than that of previous divers at Antikythera."  Join the conversation about this story »

Victim of Football Violence in Critical Condition

A 46-year-old football fan from Piraeus is hospitalized in critical condition on the island of Crete after a fight between fans of third division teams Irodotos and Ethnikos Piraeus. Konstantinos Katsoulis, supporter of Ethnikos Piraeus team, was attacked on Sunday as violence erupted between supporters of the two clubs at the Nea Alikarnasos football field. According to the medical report from the Venizelio hospital in Heraklion, the 46-year-old man was diagnosed with severe brain hemorrhage due to aneurysm rupture. The patient will be transferred to an Athens hospital for a life-saving operation. As the match was coming to an end, Irodotos fans reportedly attacked 15-20 Ethnikos supporters at the stands. The 46-year-old man received blows to the head that caused serious injury. Two more Ethnikos fans were also seriously injured. Ethnikos’ captain Manolis Lygkos urged the referee to end the game while the man received first aid treatment from the team’s doctor until the ambulance arrived. Local police announced the arrest of a 27-year-old man as suspect for the attack against Katsoulis. Two more arrests were made. This was the first incident of violence for the new football season in Greece.

31 Countries That Have A Better Tax Code Than The United States

The US tax code is falling behind its international peers and now has the third worst tax code in the developed world according a new report from the nonpartisan think tank Tax Foundation. Tax Foundation's report, which was released Monday morning, found 31 0f the 34 developed countries in the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development have a better tax code than the US. Only France and Portugal ranked lower, the report said. Here is the full list showing all of the countries that rank above the US.  1. Estonia    2. New Zealand    3. Switzerland4. Sweden    5. Australia    6. Luxembourg    7. Netherlands    8. Slovak Republic    9. Turkey    10. Slovenia    11. Finland    12. Austria    13. Korea    14. Norway    15. Ireland    16. Czech Republic    17. Denmark    18. Hungary    19. Mexico    20. Germany    21. United Kingdom    22. Belgium    23. Iceland     24. Canada    25. Japan    26. Poland    27. Greece    28. Israel    29. Chile    30. Spain    31. Italy    32. United States    33. Portugal    34. France Tax Foundation attributed America's poor ranking to a high corporate taxe rate.  "The United States scores poorly largely because it maintains the highest corporate tax rate in the developed world at 39.1 percent and is one of the six remaining countries in the OECD with a worldwide system of taxation," the Tax Foundation said. "Its poorly structured property, individual, and capital gains and dividends taxes also contribute to the low ranking." At the other end of the list were Estonia, which ranked first, followed by New Zealand and Switzerland. The Tax Foundation praised Estonia for "having the most competitive tax system in the developed world" and a "relatively low" 21% taxation rate for corporations and individuals. The Tax Foundation, which has been accused by some groups of having a conservative bent, argued its findings should prompt the US and other countries into reforming their tax codes to be more like those its report identified as leaders on the issue. "No longer can a country tax business investment and activity at a high rate without adversely affecting its economic performance," a co-author of the report, Kyle Pomerleau, said in a statement. "In recent years, many countries have recognized this fact and have moved to reform their tax codes to be more competitive. However, others have failed to do so and are falling behind the global movement." The report comes as the debate over corporate inversions heats up in US politics. Major companies, most recently Burger King, have shifted their headquarters overseas in order to avoid US tax rates. View the full report below. Join the conversation about this story »
