Greek radical leftists score clear victory in EU vote

By Renee Maltezou and Lefteris Papadimas ATHENS (Reuters) - Greece's radical leftist Syriza rode a wave of anti-austerity anger to win the country's EU election but failed to deliver a knockout blow against Prime Minister Antonis Samaras's government, the official projection showed on Sunday. Front National wins European parliament elections in France

String of sensational results rocks EU with far right triumphant in France, Denmark and Austria, and the hard left topping exit polls in Greece

France's nationalist extreme right turned European politics upside down on Sunday, trouncing the governing Socialists and the mainstream conservatives in the European parliamentary elections which across the continent returned an unprecedented number of MEPs hostile to, or sceptical about, the European Union in a huge vote of no confidence in Europe's political elite.

According to exit polls, the Front National of Marine Le Pen came first in France with more than 25% of the vote. The nationalist anti-immigrant Danish People's party won by a similar margin in Denmark. In Austria, the far right Freedom Party took one fifth of the vote, according to projections, while on the hard left, Alexis Tsipras led Greece's Syriza movement to a watershed victory over the country's two governing and traditional ruling parties, New Democracy conservatives and the Pasok social democrats.

Worrying Increase in Overdue Debts to the Greek State

The number of overdue debts to the Greek state has grown during the first quarter of 2014, compared to the same period last year. Meanwhile, new debts appear at a faster rate than the old ones that are being repaid. According to a Ministry of Finance notice, in 2013 12.3% of overdue debts were paid, whereas only 9.3% were paid in the first quarter of 2014. A 63% rise in fines for administrative violations has been added to the already expired debt increase, while it appears that new overdue debts accumulate faster than old ones are paid. According to the Finance Ministry, 91% of overdue debts that have been recorded during the last semester come from income taxes, property taxes, VAT fines and loans. Moreover, a shocking 450% increase of overdue debts in car taxes was recorded, while, at the same time, collection of property tax on the self-employed has not been successful, since it was estimated that only 7.9% of these debt repayments were collected.

Exit Polls Show SYRIZA Wins EU Battle, New Democracy Reels

Initial results from exit polls on May 25 showed that Greeks gave the major opposition Coalition of the Radical Left (SYRIZA) a margin of up to 3 percent in European Parliament elections, but likely not the knockout blow needed to force early elections. The first results – which in the first round of local elections on May 18 were wrong – gave SYRIZA the edge over the ruling New Democracy Conservatives of Greece ‘s Prime Minister Antonis Samaras and his coalition partner the PASOK Socialists in the Battle for Brussels. It the results hold up it would be an historic moment in Greece with a far-left party triumphing, albeit in a contest to send the country’s representatives, with the allocation based on the findings of the parties. SYRIZA leader Alexis Tsipras had been hoping for a margin big enough to bring down the government he blames for imposing harsh austerity measures on the orders of international lenders, including the ouster of embattled PASOK leader Evangelos Venizelos. Until PASOK from 2010-11, and an interim government, followed by coalition in June of 2012 began hitting Greeks with austerity the governments said were necessary to save the country from itself, SYRIZA had been a marginal party. Its opposition to the devastating measures saw it rise quickly. The PASOK chief had tied himself to the new center-left political movement Elia, or Olive Tree, which showed third in one exit poll but fourth behind the neo-Nazi Golden Dawn in another. SYRIZA was polling from 26-30 percent, with New Democracy ranging from 23-26 percent in one poll and 23-27 percent in another. In one exit poll, Golden Dawn – whose leaders have been jailed or arrested on charges of running a criminal gang – had from 8-10 percent in a surprise, with Elia 7-9 percent. The new populist, anti-politician To Potami movement that had been as high as third in pre-election polls was showing a disappointing 5-7 percent, tied with the KKE Communists. Then came the Independent Greeks at 3-4 percent. The polls coincided with the second round run-off of local elections, with both races contentious and Samaras warning that SYRIZA would plunge the country back into chaos just as he said he had put it on the road to recovery and brought political stability. But he couldn’t convince enough Greeks that the big pay cuts, tax hikes, slashed pensions and worker firings he implemented on demand of the Troika of the European Union-International Monetary Fund-European Central Bank (EU-IMF-ECB) in return  for 240 billion euros ($330.7 billion) in two bailouts was the only way out of a crisis. That had been caused largely by the ruling parties taking turns for four decades with wild overspending and runaway patronage that bankrupted the country. Samaras had argued the EU polls shouldn’t be a referendum on his government, especially since he said Greece had reached a primary surplus of 1.5 billion euros and last month floated a 3-billion-euro bond, the first since a previous PASOK government in 2010 first reached out for a bailout with the economy on the precipice of disaster.

EU election casts shadow over euro zone as ECB meeting approaches

By Ana Nicolaci da Costa LONDON (Reuters) - Investors this week will be watching the results of elections that could deal a blow to political parties that are key to reform efforts in the European Union and could also fan instability in Ukraine. The bonds of some struggling euro zone governments sold off last week as investors worried about expected gains for anti-EU parties in European Parliament votes in Greece and Italy. In Italy, a poor result for Prime Minister Matteo Renzi's party could undermine his drive for swift reforms, which he promised when he took power in a party coup earlier this year. The rise of anti-EU parties in northern Europe could make it harder for the European Union to deal quickly with any future resurgence of the euro zone crisis, analysts said.

The eurozone is starting to recover. Now the new phase of its crisis begins

A toxic combination of slow growth, deflation, weak banks and political unrest in the east still haunts the continent

Brace yourself for the next phase in the eurozone crisis, due to come around any time soon. That might seem an odd thing to say. After all, Portugal has just emerged from its bailout programme; Greece has dipped its toe into the bond market; while Ireland's export-slanted economy is growing at a fair lick. Crisis over, you could say.

But hang on a minute. All is not well in Europe, as the votes for fringe and extremist parties in Sunday's European parliament elections will testify. There are five good reasons why the crisis could flare up again at any time.

Samaras Fears New Democracy Loss By “Accident”

Greek Prime Minister Antonis Samaras said the May 25 elections for the European Parliament are not a referendum on his government but said he fears his New Democracy Conservatives could still lose accidentally. The elections coincide with the second round run-off for Greek municipalities that decide some key races, including the mayors of Athens and Piraeus, but the focus is on whether the major opposition Coalition of the Radical Left (SYRIZA) can win big enough in the Battle for Brussels to bring down the coalition that includes the PASOK Socialists. “It would be a mistake to allow the European election [results] create instability, because instability can have unchecked consequences,” Samaras said in an interview with Ethnos newspaper. “It took many sacrifices to get Greece back on its feet. But it would take an ‘accident’ or an unwise vote at the polls to let everything go to waste and send us back to where we where four years ago,” Samaras said. Despite that fear, he insisted the EU elections are not a contest of whether voters will repudiate the government for imposing harsh austerity measures on orders of international lenders. SYRIZA leader Alexis Tsipras said he believes his party will win by such a margin that it will lead to snap elections before the government’s term runs out in 2016. PASOK chief Evangelos Venizelos, who is serving as Samaras’ Deputy Premier/Foreign Minister, tied his party to the new center-left alliance Elia, (Olive Tree) after the Socialists fell to 3-5 percent in polls for backing continued pay cuts, tax hikes, slashed pensions and worker firings it began in a previous administration. Venizelos is under siege in the party and he warned a poor showing in the elections could bring down the government with PASOK critics sniping at him, and likely challenges to his leadership. With polls showing SYRIZA leading the EU race by about 2.5 percent, Samaras stepped up his verbal assaults on the Leftists and Tsipras, who has said if he comes to power he would revise the terms of 240 billion euros ($330.7 billion) in two bailouts from the Troika of the European Union-International Monetary Fund-European Central Bank (EU-IMF-ECB) or default, likely taking Greece out of the Eurozone. Samaras said that would destroy what he said is the country’s coming recovery from a crushing economic crisis and political stability he said his coalition brings although New Democracy and PASOK helped create a fiscal fiasco with wild overspending and unchecked patronage for decades. “Some people out there say they will shred the bailout agreements but they don’t know how. They say they’ll raise salaries with money that doesn’t exist. They don’t say where they will find it, they don’t say from whom they will borrow, because there is nobody that will lend it to us,” Samaras told Ethnos. A Public Issue survey for Efimerida ton Syntakton newspaper put the Leftists at 30 percent against 27.5 percent for the Conservatives. The center-left Olive Tree (Elia) alliance came in third at 8.5 percent, followed by the neo-fascist Golden Dawn with 8 percent. The Communist Party (KKE) and centrist newcomers To Potami (The River) were both at 6.5 percent. The right-wing, anti-bailout Independent Greeks party had 3 percent and Democratic Left (DIMAR) on 2.5 percent. A Metron Analysis poll for Antenna TV also put SYRIZA first with 24.2 percent and ND second at 21 percent. The poll showed To Potami with 6.8 percent, Golden Dawn, 6.7 percent; Elia,6.5 percent; and KKE 3.2 percent. The Independent Greeks were 2.8 percent and DIMAR 2 percent.

Lemnos Rumbles With Dozens of Aftershocks

The Greek island of Lemnos continued to be shaken during Saturday night by dozens of mild aftershocks following the magnitude 6.5 earthquake that afternoon between Lemnos and Samothrace at a focal depth of 5 km. Seismologists believe the main earthquake took place yesterday and are now expecting one major aftershock. Despite the length of the vibration and the short focal depth of the earthquake, a quick assessment showed minor damage to mainly older houses, as well as three schools, two churches and the island’s airport. After chairing a meeting with various local bodies and the Northern Aegean governor, the general secretary for civil protection and the fire chief, Greek Interior Minister Yiannis Michelakis stated that there have been damages to the plastering of 13 properties, two of which are churches.
