November 17 Member’s Published Book Causes Tension

The recently published autobiography by convicted member of the Greek terrorist organization November 17, Dimitris Koufontinas, which is available from March 5, in Greek bookstores, has already caused much debate. In his book, entitled “I Was Born November 17,” Koufontinas reveals many details about the activities of the organization, as well as about the coordination and implementation of many of the group’s operations and executions. The senior member of November 17 says about his book that he provides “without renouncing his personal story” a first account of his journey after “being active for forty years in the movement (8 years as a part of the movement, 20 years in N17 and 12 years as a political prisoner),” while also “contributing to the history of the post-junta movement of armed criticism.” Koufontinas acknowledges that the only mistake made by the organization was the death of a young passerby, Thanos Axalian, who was killed in July 1992 in a failed rocket attack on the Greek Finance Minister of the time, Ioannis Palaiokrassas. The convicted Greek terrorist also refers to the attacks on Turkish officials stationed in Greece, stating that the urban guerrilla group didn’t follow a “nationalistic” agenda, as “N17 did not attack random Turks, but only delivered hits on the Turkish imperialistic capitalism, whose victims are also everyday Turkish people.” Dimitris Koufontinas is considered to be one of the key members of November 17 and was present at most of the operations conducted by the group. He was the organization’s cashier and thus responsible for the money gathered in the several hits, which until today is still unaccounted for. He is currently serving a life sentence at Korydallos prison in Athens. Political reactions on the publication of the book The book has already triggered massive reactions all over Greek social media and the political scene. The cover of the book alone, which depicts Greek resistance fighters during the Second World War, got many negative reviews, which were also critical of the publishing house, Livanis Publications. The publisher, however, accompanied the book’s release with a statement distancing himself from everything written in the book, but not commenting on the selection of the specific cover. Meanwhile, the decision of the leader of the radical left group Roza, which is part of SYRIZA, Nikos Giannopoulos, to preface the book, caused tension earlier on Wednesday in parliament, with many MP’s from New Democracy asking SYRIZA to denounce its member, claiming that it isn’t possible for the main opposition party in a Republic to have ties to a terrorist group.

Telegraph: Greek Island Among Europe’s 10 Hidden Seaside Resorts

As the countdown to summer begins, foreign travel guides begin to overflow with information on the most ideal tourist destinations.. The British news agency “Telegraph” presented Europe’s 10 hidden seaside resorts and Kea,  Greece, seems to have enraptured the author of the article who included the island on the list. The author writes “Now that Athens has moved its airport away from the city and Piraeus, all the more reason to take the back door route to the islands. A morning flight, a short taxi ride to Lavrio and there will be time to look for Byron’s signature on the temple at Cape Sounion before catching the evening boat to Kea, with onward connections to the western Cyclades or Syros, hub of Aegean ferry schedules.” “There is only one flaw in this fine plan for an island-hopping tour. Kea is such a seductive and peaceful place, you may not make it past first base,” highlights the author. Then the author continues by mentioning a previous article of Telegraph concerning Kea which was posted last summer. The article characterizes the Greek island as a real postmodern island.

48-hour Strike for Greek Pharmacists

The Panhellenic Pharmaceutical Association (PFS) in today’s long meeting decided unanimously to go on a 48-hour strike next week. The strike on March 10 and 11 will be the answer to troika’s claims of the market’s opening for non-prescription drugs (MYSYFA). Next Tuesday, pharmacists are expected to meet anew in order assess the developments and decide on a course of action. The President of the PFS Mr. Kyriakos Theodosiadis urged the Greek government to adopt the positions of Greece’s Minister of Health Adonis Georgiadis concerning troika as well as to dismiss the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) report concerning the pharmaceutical care. “Everyone can realize that competition and health are two concepts incompatible with each other. We denounce that this report can neither be the government’s gospel nor a new memorandum-product, prefabricated in command of the large interests which it apparently serves,” noted Mr. Theodosiadis.

Dictators in fridges: the artist putting Franco and co in cold storage

Spanish artist Eugenio Merino has stuffed mannequins of totalitarian leaders into chiller cabinets. It's just what we need in this age of burgeoning nationalism

It seems incredible that General Franco is still oppressing artists in Spain from beyond the grave. The dictator who rose to power by defeating Spain's Republic in the 1930s civil war and ruled until his death in 1975 might seem to be a forgotten nightmare in today's democratic Spain. But an artist has succeeded in provoking a foundation that preserves his memory into taking some distinctly intolerant legal steps.

Eugenio Merino is being taken to court – for the second time – for works he has made using the image of the late authoritarian ruler. His work Punching Franco is a lifelike head of Franco designed to be used as a punchbag; the Franco Foundation says it is "demeaning".

He has also been sued for his work Always Franco, a lifelike figure of Franco inside a fridge. He has now extended this out to create a whole series of dictators in fridges.

Merino's refrigerated dictators sound great. Hopefully we can look forward to Mussolini by the cold pasta, Stalin next to the vodka and Pinochet's fridge being left off so he goes rotten and has to be dumped in the rubbish. Can you recycle fascists?

Apparently you can, in 21st-century Europe. The amazing thing about Merino's dictator art is not that he does it but that people will come out of the woodwork to take offence at a satire on someone like Franco.

The atrocities that brought Franco to power are well-documented, not least in art. Picasso would not let his painting Guernica be shown in Spain while Franco lived. It is a howl of rage at the bombing of Guernica by the Luftwaffe, carried out on Franco's behalf in the Spanish civil war. The poet Federico García Lorca was murdered by fascists in the same war.

Franco won but his true face was seen by artists and still is, in these appropriately contemptuous portraits of him as punching bag or chilled corpse.

How can anyone speak out in defence of Franco's reputation? Yet in contemporary Europe this is no surprise. Neo-fascists have become part of the political scene in Greece, while the current situtation in Ukraine has eerie echoes of the 1930s. In Britain the "patriotic" rantings of Ukip are taken seriously, Scottish nationalists pursue autarchy and even the centenary of the terrible first world war is seen by some as an opportunity for nationalist nostalgia.

These are confused days. The lies and delusions of every variety of nationalism get an absurdly tolerant hearing as the global economic optimism of a decade ago seems a long, long time ago.

The opposite of global capitalism is not, it turns out, a new left but a new right which casually dabbles in odious nationalism of various tints. So we can't be sure the age of the dictators is gone. Maybe Franco and his brethren really are just waiting in their fridges.

79 Flu-Related Deaths in Greece

The flu continues to spread rapidly in Greece. According to the latest epidemiological data from the Hellenic Center for Disease Control and Prevention (KEELPNO) flu-related deaths now stand at 79. The victims belonged to high-risk groups and hadn’t been vaccinated against the flu. The specialists said that most of the affected patients are suffering from chronic diseases and haven’t been vaccinated against the flu. They also stressed that seasonal flu is tailing off but will probably last until late March. As of yesterday, 52 patients were hospitalized in Intensive Care Units (ICU) because of flu-related complications. Moreover, since the outbreak of the crisis at the beginning of the year, about 213 flu cases have been transferred to hospital ICUs. KEELPNO experts suggest the timely administration of antiviral medication, which is available for free from hospital pharmacies.

Where Did the Money from Skorpios Island Go?

It has been almost a year since the legendary Skorpios island of Aristotle Onassis passed into the hands of Dmitry Rimpolovlef, as the Greek tycoon’s granddaughter needed cash and decided to sell it. But what did Athina Onassis do with the money she received from selling her grandfather’s property? The answer is “horses and stables!” According to sources, Athena Onassis invested the money she got from selling the Greek island in buying a stable. Not, of course, just any stable – but one of the most organized stables in Grand Prix Village in Wellington in the United States, where she intends to train her horses during the winter. The “golden” heir paid a lot more than the stable’s value; said to be worth about 3.8 million euros, she paid 12 million dollars to buy it. What’s more, the stable was not for sale until the moment that the Greek tycoon’s granddaughter expressed her interest. According to sources close to the former owner of the stable, “Mark had just built a new stable that cost him about two million dollars, while the total investment did not exceed six million dollars. So, it is natural that when someone comes and offers twice the money, he would not be able to refuse the proposal.” It is worth mentioning that last June, the richest man on earth, Bill Gates, bought a stable for his daughter’s horses for some 8.7 million dollars.

New Earthquake Strikes Cephalonia

The island Cephalonia, Greece, was hit by another earthquake a few hours ago. The earthquake was recorded at 14:49 and measured 4.7 on the Richter scale, according to the Institute of Geodynamics in Athens. The locals have learned to live with the fear of earthquakes as the island has been hit by several over the past months. The earthquake’s depth was located 20 km away from Lixouri and 24 km from Argostoli.  Today, local people were once again panicked by the quake and fled from their houses. However, Greek seismologists reassured that they strongly believe this quake was expected, as the aftershock seismic activity following recent quakes on the island has not yet come to an end.

German president visits Greece, will visit site where Nazi troops massacred 92 civilians

by  Associated Press German president seeks to lay war ghosts in Greece Associated Press - 5 March 2014 09:53-05:00

ATHENS, Greece (AP) — Germany's president is due in Athens on a visit that will seek to lay some of the ghosts of a brutal Nazi occupation, amid renewed anti-German sentiment stoked by Greece's financial crisis.

Joachim Gauck's three-day visit will include a speech Friday where German army troops massacred 92 civilians near the northeastern town of Ioannina, and a meeting with the town's Jewish community.

In an interview with Greek Kathimerini daily published ahead if his arrival Wednesday, Gauck refused to discuss demands in Greece that Germany should pay reparations for World War II atrocities. He said Germany bears an undeniable "moral burden."

Germany rejected a demand last month by Greek Jews for compensation over a WWII ransom extracted to free Jewish slave laborers — who were subsequently murdered in Nazi death camps.

Extortion Ring Found in Crete

Greek Police have bust a crime ring dealing in fraud, extortion and blackmail, in Crete. Businessmen from the island and a well-known lawyer were part of the ring and it is estimated that their fraud amounted to 17 million euros. According to local media, this is one of the largest and most serious economic crimes that has ever taken place on the island. The police, in collaboration with the Economic Police (YPOADIE), found that members of the criminal organization had set up fake tourism businesses, and it is estimated that they embezzled nearly three million euros from the Greek state and 14 million euros from individuals. According to Greek news reports, one of the front-men of the organization was working for a short time as a Public Power Corporation (PPC) employee, and in recent years had started working as an executive in the offices of various politicians and MPs in Crete and elsewhere in Greece. At dawn today dozens of armed police raided the houses of people suspected of involvement in the crime ring, in Heraklion, Agios Nikolaos and Messara. So far six members of the organization have been arrested, and police investigations are continuing.

EU ministers discuss energy objectives

by  Elena Ralli

The EU Council of Energy Ministers met today in Brussels to discuss energy issues. They also held a public policy debate on the Commission communication on energy prices and costs in Europe.

As the Greek Minister for Environment, Energy and Climate Change Yiannis Maniatis, who chaired the meeting, stated: "We cannot enhance competitiveness with a more costly energy sector than other international competitors, with non economically efficient and unsustainable energy technologies, as well as with fragmented markets. This is why we need to further invest on research and technological development and on necessary energy infrastructure, including interconnections of isolated and island regions of the European Union. By strengthening the competitiveness of the European Industry through reducing energy costs, we will decisively contribute to our social cohesion, by maintaining the existing labour posts and fighting unemployment."

During the meeting, ministers stressed the importance of completing the internal energy market by 2014 and the need to further develop new energy infrastructure to secure the uninterrupted supply of energy throughout the EU at affordable prices. They also highlighted the need for households and industry to reduce their energy consumption by improving energy efficiency and energy savings and underlined the importance of creating a level playing field on the world energy market to strengthen the competitiveness of European industry.

The Council also held a public policy debate on a Commission communication for a 2030 framework for climate and energy policy from the energy policy perspective. Ministers stressed that future climate and energy policies should aim at balancing different objectives, such as sustainability and a shift towards a low-carbon economy, with affordable energy prices, safe and secure energy systems and European competitiveness.
