What Kind of Books Do Greeks Read?

Greeks love books and enjoy reading before falling asleep at night, even more so on the beach during the summertime. During the recession in Greece, books are seen as good companions that help people escape the harsh reality and anxiety, allowing themselves to travel into a calm, interesting world. However, compared with the past, the number of books Greeks read per year has declined from about seven to five. The factors that determine the choice of books are cultural, racial or social, such as one’s profession. Gender often plays an important role in choosing a book.  Greeks like to choose books on their own, based on personal taste and their emotional state. Contrary to popular belief, Greeks prefer to read novels as a pose to historical books. They also show interest in psychology and philosophy, as well as books on religion. Books on travel or other cultures are very popular as well. During the last year there is an increase of written works by significant Greek writers such as Nikos Kazantzakis and Nikos Kavvadias. In regards to gender, women might be considered as bookworms but this is actually far from true. Women in Greece get easily excited by the content of a book, however, they often stop reading if they don’t find it fascinating.  On the other hand, Greek men do not buy books so often, but read with more intensity than women. Swiss Government Doesn’t Accept Taxation of Greek Deposits

The Greek Finance Minister, Yannis Stournaras and his Swiss counterpart, Eveline Widmer-Schlumpf met on Tuesday to discuss the issue of taxation of Greek deposits in Swiss banks. However, the two sides didn’t reach an agreement. The Greek Finance Minister requested an arrangement similar to that signed between Switzerland and Britain in 2011, which imposed a one-off levy on secret account holders to settle their tax obligations.  ”Greece’s bad financial situation was reversed thanks to citizens’ great efforts and sacrifices,” he said during their meeting, noting that Greeks with untaxed capital in Swiss  banks should contribute to the country’s rescue. “Models we had earlier considered and discussed to prevent untaxed money in Swiss banks are partly outdated,” said the Swiss Finance Minister, stating that the “British model” can’t be applied to Greece. She proposed an  automatic information exchange between tax authorities at an international level. Switzerland is a a well-known tax haven. It is estimated that Greek deposits in Swiss banks amount to 60 billion euros while German deposits reach the 200 billion mark.

Farmers Say They May Escalate Protests, Block More Roads

More farmers have been heading towards the road blocks in Northern Greece, Christos Kamtsis, member of the coordination committee for farmers road blocks told ANA-MPA on Tuesday, adding that protests may escalate. Farmers oppose a measure requiring those with turnover below 40,000 euros to keep accounts on spending and income. They demand a tax-free family income of 20,000 euros, increased by 5,000 euros for each child; that farmers unable to pay debts to the state be not prosecuted; that there is no seizure of property (fields or houses) of property valued up to 300,000 euros and a 30 percent haircut in loans of up to 200,000 euros. They also hope to reduce production costs (by getting tax-free oil and low electricity rates) and boost livestock breeding. “Our struggle is not politically motivated. We are deeply concerned for the future of the agricultural sector,” Kamtsis said. Farmers’ protests so far have been mainly focused in central and northern Greece. The two main road blocks are in Nikeaa on the Athens-Thessaloniki national highway outside Larissa, central Greece and at the junction of Kouloura on Egnatia highway, in northern Greece. At Nikea, tensions flared between police and farmers on Monday, with minor incidents and use of teargas, when farmers attempted to block the Athens-Thessaloniki national highway and were prevented by police. Costas Lioliopoulos, Vice President of the Imathia farmers’ movement, told ANA-MPA that farmers were expected to decide within the day whether they would block Kouloura junction and said they were even considering rallying in Athens and the Finance ministry in particular. According to the farmers’ Coordinating Committee, approximately 30-40 roadblocks will be set up across the Athens-Thessaloniki national highway and regional network in northern Greece within the week. Uninsured Patients in Greece Struggle with Cancer

February 4 is World Cancer Day which was founded to raise awareness of cancer, encourage its prevention and treatment, as well as to support cancer patients and their families. But when it comes to Greece, the situation is a little bit different. In Greece, during this period of economic crisis, a main issue for citizens is that they simply don’t have enough money to pay for health insurance as approximately one in three citizens is uninsured. As a consequence, many uninsured patients struggle daily with the expenses they must incur resulting from their disease. Among them are many cancer patients and their families who are trying to cope with the disease itself and its unbearable cost since they do not have any financial support from the Greek state. Giorgos, 47, was diagnosed with cancer two months ago. “When I heard the doctor I was shocked. Time stood still and I couldn’t react. I was thinking of my wife, my kids, my dreams and at the same time I was uninsured and didn’t have the financial means to fight for my life,” Giorgos said to the Greek newspaper Efimerida ton Syntakton. Cancer has two merciless features: the battle is very expensive and treatment must be followed immediately after diagnosis. Medicine costs approximately 2,000 euros for a period lasting ten or twenty days and radiotherapy costs 700 euros a treatment. Frequent blood tests (40 euros each) and X-ray computed tomographies (at least 100 euros each) are also required along with a balanced diet, psychological support and a good psychology. Syrago is 34-years-old and has been unemployed for the last 3 and a half years. She is struggling with her everyday needs and expenses and her mother is suffering from cancer. “She is only 57 and refuses to receive chemotherapy treatments. She thinks that she is a burden for me because she cannot walk, take care of herself or contribute money toward treatments. Many cancer patients feel this way,” Syrago said. Eleni’s husband has also been diagnosed with cancer and unemployed. Going through endless bureaucracy in an attempt to obtain the money required for proper treatment, left them exhausted. “I’m deeply disappointed with the Greek state. If we were living in another country we could rely on social services, on our insurance or on psychologists provided by the public hospital. At this point, all we can only rely on is the solidarity of our fellow citizens. The Greek Society of Cancer Patients is helping us find the proper medicine, run the tests required and generally cope with the everyday struggles of the disease,” Eleni stated.

Filippidis Returns To Greece, Arrested On The Spot

The former chairman of the failed state-owned Hellenic Postbank, Angelos Filippidis returned to Greece on Feb. 5 even as authorities were urging his re-arrest and extradition from Turkey where he had been initially taken into custody before being released by a court. Filippidis’ lawyer confirmed earlier that his client returned to Greece and intends to co-operate with officials investigating a bad loan scheme at the bank of some 500 million euros, the proceeds given without collateral and even to heavily indebted people or companies, prosecutors said. Immediately after his arrival at Eleftherios Venizelos Airport, the Greek authorities arrested him as there was a pending arrest warrant against him for the Postbank scandal. He was taken to  police headquarters in Athens. Filippidis, one of the main figures in the Postbank scandal, is accused of providing major loans to Greek businessmen without any assurances. Investigators found 14 million euros in various secret foreign bank accounts in Filippidis’ name and said he had 25,000 euros and a Swiss residency permit on him when first arrested. There was no information immediately available on why he decided to return to face charges although he said he was being politically persecuted because he’s a friend of former Premier and previous New Democracy Conservative party leader Costas Karamanlis. He didn’t explain why the current government of Prime Minister Antonis Samaras, the current party leader, would want him singled out. On Jan. 11, Filippidis was arrested by the Turkish authorities in Istanbul due to an Interpol alert although he was tracked while using his cell phone to call Greek TV to defend himself.

UK struggles to stay in global economy 'premier league'

Britain falls to 19th in PwC's Escape index, seven places down on its pre-financial crisis position

Britain is struggling to stay in the "premier league" of countries ranked by the consultants PwC after suffering more grievously than rival nations in the slump of 2008-09.

PwC's Escape index – which looks at a range of economic, political, social, technological and environmental indicators of success – placed the UK 19th, down seven places on its pre-financial crisis position.

Britain's fall down a league table headed by Sweden, Switzerland and Singapore was matched only by the declines suffered by the countries worst hit by the eurozone sovereign debt meltdown: Greece, Ireland, Spain and Portugal.

John Hawksworth, chief economist at PwC and co-author of the report, said: "The UK continues to score well as an easy place to do business and recent sharp falls in unemployment show the flexibility of its labour market. But the UK was hit hard by the global financial crisis: since then it has had relatively low GDP per capita growth and high inflation, although both measures improved significantly during 2013."

As Europe's financial centre, the UK was particularly hard hit by the near-collapse of the global banking system in the winter of 2008-09, with national output falling by more than 7% and then recovering only slowly thereafter. It scored badly on many of the economic indicators assessed by PwC, such as living standards, the cost of living and the government's budget deficit.

The sharp decline followed a period between 2000 and 2007 when Britain held its place in the global pecking order despite the strong advances enjoyed by parts of the emerging world.

Hawksworth said the UK was now likely to start moving back up the table after better economic news in 2014.

"UK businesses and consumers are likely to feel the benefit of the current recovery because the brakes went on so hard between 2007 and 2012. Now we're seeing renewed job creation and growth, the UK is likely to be moving back up the index.

"Despite the recent cyclical upturn, our analysis shows that the UK has had some persistent structural weaknesses throughout the period since 2000. We find that the UK lags behind the average of its advanced economy peers in terms of investment, education, trade, income inequality and also general levels of trust in the population."

PwC said its aim was to produce a holistic measure of how countries were performing over time, based on five yardsticks of success: economic growth and stability; social progress and cohesion; communications technology; political, legal and regulatory institutions; and environmental sustainability. Northern European countries dominated the PwC top 10, with China rising five places to 16th, above the US at 18th and France at 20th. None of the four MINT countries – Mexico, Indonesia, Nigeria and Turkey – identified by the economist Jim O'Neill, made it into the top 30.

Hawksworth added: "To graduate to the advanced economy club, it is not enough just to do well on traditional economic indicators such as GDP growth and inflation. Governments and business investors should pay attention to the broader range of measures that our Escape index captures."

The Ivy League Colleges With The Most On-Campus Drug And Alcohol Arrests

Last week, we brought you a series of maps showing which colleges across the country have the most on-campus drug and alcohol arrests.

Surprisingly, or not, all of the Ivy League schools were absent from this list. However, Rehabs.com — who put this information together — compiled a separate ranking for the elite eight universities.

"We wanted to find interesting data that's been under-explored," Drugs on Campus project head Jon Millward told Business Insider. Many of the previously existing reports on campus drug use were "more surface," Millward said.

The information comes from the Department of Education's Office of Postsecondary Education, which only tracks campus crime reports, not those from the surrounding area.

Dartmouth College leads the Ivy League in both on-campus drug arrests and alcohol arrests — the latter by a significant margin. The Rehabs.com report attributes this to Dartmouth's dominant Greek culture:

What's obvious is that there weren't very many of them. Dartmouth College sits comfortably in first position, with more than five times more alcohol arrests than Yale University. This result matches a known problem Dartmouth has with drinking on its campus, attributed mostly to the fact that fraternities dominate the social scene there. About two-thirds of undergraduates at Dartmouth join a fraternity or sorority, which is nearly double the rate of any other Ivy League school. And Greeks are known to be more likely to abuse alcohol.

Russia Won't Allow Chobani Yogurt At The Sochi Olympics

NY senator calls on Russian government to allow yogurt delivery to Olympic athletes in Sochi

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer of New York is calling on the Russian government to allow Chobani Greek yogurt to be delivered to Sochi (SOH'-chee) for U.S. Olympic athletes and NBC Studios employees.

Schumer said Tuesday that a shipment of Chobani yogurt is being held up at Newark Liberty International Airport in New Jersey because of "unattainable" Russian Customs certifications. The U.S. Department of Agriculture has requested that Russia approve a USDA safety certificate for the yogurt, but Schumer said Russia still won't allow the shipment.

Chobani, based in upstate New York, is an official sponsor of the U.S. Olympic team. Schumer said the yogurt will be eaten only by U.S. citizens in Sochi.

A call to Russian Ambassador Sergey Kislyak's press office wasn't immediately returned.
