Illegal Immigration Fuels Greek Violence Colin Freeman- The Telegraph

By Colin Freeman- The Telegraph As musical genres go, Greek anti-fascist rap is one of the more niche ones, and it's probably fair to say that until recently, not many folks outside of his home country had heard of Pavlos Fyssas. A 34-year-old who sang under the name Killah P, his lyrics railed against the Greek Far Right ? not the military junta who ruled from 1967 to 74, but the Neo-Nazi Golden Dawn party, whose MPs goosestepped their way into parliament last year on an anti-immigrant ticket. Fyssas's face has been all over Europe's TV screens, having become a martyr to his cause. On September 18, he was stabbed to death, allegedly by a member of Golden Dawn who set upon him in a pre-meditated assault.

Israel holds exercise over Greece ahead of Iran talks

ARON HELLER, Associated Press JERUSALEM (AP) ? In an apparent message to Iran, the Israeli military said Thursday it had carried out a 'special long-range flight exercise' and posted rare footage of the drill online. Israeli military officials said the drill took place over Greece, a key regional ally. The military has done similar drills in the past but releasing the footage appears aimed at sending a message to Iran before the talks that a viable military options remains. The military said its squadrons practiced refueling planes in midair this week and tested the air force's ability. The accompanying footage shows a tanker plane refueling a fighter jet midair, a key part of any long-range operation. The release of the video comes just days before Western powers are to open new talks with Iran over its disputed nuclear program. The U.S. and its allies accuse Iran of using its civilian nuclear program as a cover to develop nuclear weapons. Israel has repeatedly warned that it would be willing to take military action if necessary to stop Iran from going nuclear. The talks on Iran's nuclear program will be held next week with the five permanent U.N. Security Council members ? the U.S., Russia, China, Britain, France ? plus Germany, collectively known as the P5+1. President Barack Obama disclosed in an interview with The Associated Press last Friday that U.S. intelligence agencies believe Iran continues to be a year or more away from building a nuclear weapon, in contrast to Israel's assessment that Tehran is closer

Tour Fordham University's Stunning Campus In The Bronx

This summer, we called Columbia University "The Most Beautiful College Campus In New York City," sparking a firestorm as to whether the Ivy League school or Fordham had the more scenic digs.

So, we decided to take a ride up to the Bronx to see if we could come to a conclusion as to which school's campus reigned supreme. As we did at Columbia, we attended an information session and a campus tour.

And while it may seem a cop out to say they're too different to compare, it's the truth. Columbia has a classical Greek-inspired beauty, while Fordham is perhaps the embodiment of the traditional collegiate Gothic aesthetic.

Founded in 1841, Fordham is a Jesuit university and was the first Catholic college in the Northeast. Since then, the school has grown into an academic institution with 15,000 students and a separate campus near Lincoln Center in Manhattan.

The campus harnesses the best qualities of Northeast collegiate culture and Jesuit tradition, with green quads and Gothic buildings sharing space with one of the most gorgeous churches anywhere in the city.

The Metro-North train out of New York City's Grand Central Station took us right to Fordham's door. Fordham is located in the Fordham neighborhood of the Bronx. These shops were set up on a plaza right outside the Metro-North station, across the street from the school. The entrance across from the Metro-North station immediately opens up into Fordham's spacious campus. See the rest of the story at Business Insider

Church Mosaic Finished Piece by Piece

Work on the mosaic that will grace the entrance to the Dormition of the Virgin Mary Greek Orthodox Church of the Hamptons in Shinnecock Hills began last week. Artisans from Tuscany began assembling the mosaic, which was constructed in Italy and brought over in pieces. According to Father Constantine Lazarakis, the mosaic depicts the Dormition of the Virgin Mary, sometimes translated as the ?Falling Asleep of the Theotokos.? Theotokos is the term used most often in the Orthodox Church to refer to the Virgin Mary; it means ?the Mother of God.? The icon shows a funeral scene, with the Apostles gathered around the Virgin Mary?s deathbed. At the center is Jesus Christ, looking on from heaven at the scene, and holding an infant. The infant represents the soul of Christ?s mother being received in heaven. Notably, Saints Peter and Paul are, respectively, at her head and feet, and St. Peter is holding an incense burner, showing the reverence he and the other Apostles have for her.

Charter of Quebec Values or a Change in Immigration Policy?

A major controversy has erupted in Quebec as a result of Premier Pauline Marois' proposed "Charter of Quebec Values," which aim to prohibit public sector employees from wearing or displaying any overt religious symbols. The proposed bill would ban the donning, for example, of a hijab or turban by government workers but, at the same time, permit the continued display of the large crucifix hanging in the province's legislature. Quebec's ethnic communities were swift and unanimous in their condemnation but, surprisingly, two former influential separatist premiers and leaders of Marois' party, Jacques Parizeau and Lucien Bouchard, also turned thumbs down on the initiative. Arguing that they were in favor of the removal of religious symbols only from those in positions of authority, such as judges and police officers, they implied that the National Assembly's crucifix would have to go as well. The official line from Canada's federal government, which was delivered by Multiculturalism Minister Jason Kenney, was: "If it's determined that a prospective law violates the constitutional protections to freedom of religion to which all Canadians are entitled, we will defend those rights vigorously." NDP Leader Thomas Mulcair also reacted negatively to the plan: "There's no expiry date on human rights. It's not a popularity contest, this for us is completely unacceptable and the NDP will be standing up foursquare against this project." Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau was no less forthcoming: "Madame [Pauline] Marois does not speak for all Quebecers when she puts forward an idea of forcing people to choose between their work and their religion, to set out an idea of second-class Quebecers who would not qualify to work in public institutions because of their religion". The debate has turned bitter as today's growing immigrant population of Quebec, once predominantly European in nature, is overwhelmingly derived from the French-speaking countries of Northwest Africa and from Asia. How can Ms. Marois believe that with two out of every three newcomers to the province arriving from the former French colonies of the Maghreb and from Asia, from lands, that is, with vastly different religious beliefs from her own, that she can outlaw the display of the symbols of their faith? If the Parti Quebecois is desirous of a more "homogeneous" community, perhaps it should attempt to address the issue by refocusing its immigration policies. For the current state of affairs in Southern Europe, where the economies of Italy, Greece, Spain and Portugal have been devastated by the ongoing crisis, may present a golden opportunity for the government to invite willing, educated immigrants with cultures more similar to that of traditional Quebecers, provide them with intensive French language instruction and encourage them to settle here. An equally attractive pool of potential candidates with backgrounds closely resembling that of the Roman-Catholic Quebecois can be found in the countries of the former Soviet Union and the ex-Communist States of Central and Eastern Europe. The reality, however, is that current statistics depict migration from Europe to Quebec in free fall, dropping to 16.6 percent of the total in 2010 and plummeting to a recent historic low of 15.3 percent in 2011. Instead of the province attempting to enforce short-sighted legislation that can do little else but foment division and anger among its citizens, it should be putting its efforts into creating and promoting a harmonious, inclusive society that is representative of the mosaic that is Quebec today.

French finance minister: French, European economies are moving slowly out of recession

by  Associated Press Official: French economy is on the move Associated Press - 11 October 2013 10:52-04:00

WASHINGTON (AP) — French Finance Minister Pierre Moscovici says his economy is on the move and so are other economies in Europe.

He said Friday this motion is slow and not always visible. He said European countries were emerging from the depths of recession and should be more vigorous in adopting policies that promote growth.

Moscovici contrasted the current improved situation with a year ago when there was doubt the euro would survive and whether Greece would leave the 17-nation currency zone.

He is in Washington for the annual meetings of the International Monetary Fund and World Bank. He would not say anything about the U.S. debt standoff, certain to be a major topic at these sessions.

News Topics: Business, Economy, Recessions and depressions
